The Toa Mata are the group of Toa who originally introduced the world of BIONICLE and who first saved the island of Mata Nui from the Makuta, now known as Teridax. Their name refers to their destiny to awake Mata Nui. The Toa were later transformed into the Toa Nuva by Energized Protodermis.

Created on the island of Artakha around 100,000 years ago, the Toa Mata first awoke on the Order of Mata Nui base known as Daxia. Here they were trained in combat by Hydraxon. They were then sent to Karda Nui, where they defended the Av-Matoran at work there. While there, they had to contain energy spikes which were affecting the Rahi there, such as Air Serpents, and they had to defeat the sentient lightning bolt Rahi known as the Avohkah. After the Matoran left the core, the Mata entered the Codrex. Inside, they entered their Toa Canisters to await the day they would be needed.

During the Great Cataclysm, the Toa were launched into the Endless Ocean the moment Mata Nui fell asleep. The plan was for the canisters to beach on the island known as Mata Nui and for the Toa to head down to Metru Nui via Kini-Nui/Mangaia, but their canisters malfunctioned and drifted around aimlessly in the ocean surrounding Mata Nui for a thousand years. The drifting ended after Takua accidentally activated a failsafe mechanism by gathering the six Toa Stones placed by the Toa Metru 1,000 years beforehand. The thousand years had taken a toll upon the Toa Mata, however: first, their muscles and organic tissue decayed, and they arrived on Mata Nui in pieces and had to rebuild themselves; and second, the long hibernation had left them with amnesia, forcing them to rely on external information while their memories slowly coalesced.

Upon arriving on the island (and reconstructing themselves), the Toa Mata quickly met their respective Turaga - the former Toa Metru - and learned of the menace of Teridax and their mission: Each Toa had to gather six Great Kanohi - a Kakama, Hau, Pakari, Akaku, Kaukau, and Miru - before they could hope to face Teridax. Soon afterwards, the Toa met each other - even though they did not remember each other, the Toa of Fire named Tahu soon emerged as team leader. After individual adventures and setbacks, the Toa reluctantly agreed to work as a team. This teamwork would prove crucial to the gathering of the Kanohi Masks of Power; the first battle with Teridax in his lair, called Mangaia; the Bohrok Wars; and the desperate struggle against the Bahrag queens for the island of Mata Nui.

After their defeat of the Bahrag, the Toa fell into large tubes filled with Energized Protodermis, known for its ability to transform or destroy; exposure to the Protodermis transformed the Toa Mata into the Toa Nuva.

In the Toa Empire Pocket Dimension, the Toa Mata were still placed inside canisters in case of something going wrong with Mata Nui. Tuyet learned their location from Artakha, and sent a team of Toa to retrieve them, but none of the Toa survived. Tuyet then discovered a secret chamber in the Coliseum where she was able to fake the signal to launch the canisters. She then convinced the Toa Mata that the Brotherhood of Makuta and Dark Hunters were major threats and had to be eliminated, so they all joined her in an attempt to create peace. However, Pohatu eventually grew concerned with her methods and created a secret rebel group with Lesovikk. When the resistance attacked the empire, Tahu, Kopaka, Lewa, and Gali were killed in the battle.

The Toa Mata were the first BIONICLE sets ever released in 2001, using a revolutionary combination of technic pieces and their own unique molds. They wore the first ever Kanohi masks, and carried new, unique LEGO pieces used as weapons.

[carve] Trivia

  • The term "Toa Mata" was made quite a while after that story arc took place to prevent confusion as they were previously simply known as "Toa" because they were the only Toa ever seen in the story at the time. Before the term was official, some fans called them the "Toa Olda," a pun on "Nuva".
  • Artakha designed the Toa Mata to look similar to Mata Nui.
