History

Originally, Jaller chose the bravest Matoran he knew to accompany him on a quest to try and save the Toa Nuva, who had been captured by the ruthless Piraka on an attempt to retrieve the Mask of Life from Voya Nui and save the Great Spirit's life. The group, comprised of Nuparu, Hahli, Kongu, Jaller, Matoro, Hewkii and Takanuva. They took ancient underwater chutes from Metru Nui, and arrived on a barren land, with the only feature being a dark tunnel. Takanuva, a Toa of Light, naturally went through first, but to both the Toa's and Matoran's shock, he disappeared when he passed through the entrance, and the glow of light around him vanished. A plan was quickly decided, Jaller, Hewkii, and Kongu would go in first to try and find Takanuva, while the others took necessary precautions and followed after. Nuparu tied himself, Hahli, and Matoro together with a length of cable, and gave each of them Lightstones. Nuparu, assuming that the light would go out again, suggested to the others that they shout to each other to keep going in the right direction. However, to Matoro's dismay, they found that whatever was in the tunnel was absorbing both light and sound. Matoro continued to walk, uneasily, until he tripped over someone. Believing it to be a friend, he grabbed the hand, and guided the figure out of the tunnel, where he saw everyone safely out. Looking to who he was holding, he saw the figure slip out of his hand and leave.

The group rested on a narrow strip of land, flanked by churning waters, and a Gateway. While some Matoran stayed on guard, the others slept. Jaller and Matoro began talking, and were interrupted with Takanuva came back, saying he had seen a Matoran. The group moved towards the Gateway, and, all passed through, except for Takanuva. Hahli found a tablet written in an odd language, and found that the gateway repels light, making it impossible for Takanuva to come through. The Matoran were unable to come back through the gateway, as someone did not wish it.

As the Matoran began to climb the mountain, they kept a close eye on the Matoran they were following. Reaching the top of the mountain, they found Manas and a bowl shaped canyon. When they were brought to the leader, Karzahni, their masks were stripped away, replaced, and the group, with the exception of Hahli, was sent to work at the furnace. While Hahli filled Karzahni in on the goings-on of the universe, Jaller and the other Matoran made important discoveries; the most important of which was a chamber with Toa Canisters. After speaking to a crazy Matoran, the Matoran had shown the others where the canisters were. As Kongu made to get Hahli, Karzahni came down, dragging Hahli. Quickly, the group made it into the canisters and 'pushed' off, but not before a small conflict with Karzahni. Eventually, the canisters made it to the island of Voya Nui, where a storm was raging. A bolt from the Red Star lanced downward, and hit the canisters. Upon getting out, the Toa found that they had been transformed into mighty Toa Inika.

The Toa took shelter in a cave to plan their next actions and, doubly, figure out what had happened. Nuparu took off his mask in the cave and discovered that their faces gave off a bright, blinding glow. Replacing it almost immediately, Hahli took off hers, thinking it was 'alive'. Matoro, disbelieving of this, touched Hahli's mask, which recoiled at Matoro's touch. Hahli replaced the sentient mask, while Jaller tested the masks to see if they still contained powers.

After departing from the cave, the Toa's path was blocked by a lava flow, which Nuparu, who had discovered his mask power, helped them cross. Picking the Toa up, he transported them across, nearly dropping Hahli along the way. Jaller leapt into action, using his own mask power, and saved her.

Following this, the Voya Nui Resistance Team met up with the Toa, and filled in the Toa with the current events that had taken place on Voya Nui. The Matoran then provided the Toa Zamor Launchers, with Zamor Spheres loaded with Energized Protodermis, in hopes of freeing the Matoran enslaved by the Piraka. It was decided that the Toa and Matoran would split into 3 different groups. Jaller, Hahli, Dalu, and Piruk were assigned to go to the volcano and free Matoran from the influence of the Virus. Hewkii, Matoro, Kazi, and Balta were sent to try and find Axonn, in order to help tip the tide in battle.

Nuparu, Kongu, Garan, and Velika were given the task to infiltrate the Piraka Stronghold. After defeating a Nektann, the group ventured further into the stronghold, discovering histories of Voya Nui, and a tablet inscribed with the words Vezok and Vezon. To their horror, Kongu and Nuparu found a room with the masks of the Toa Nuva. Believing them to be deceased, Kongu and Nuparu entered the Crystal Vat room, and proceeded to attack the Piraka, and their ally, Brutaka. The remainder of the team burst in as well, and a conflict ensued. During the battle, Hakann and Thok fired a Zamor and Brutaka, stealing his power. With newfound strength, the two Piraka battered both their allies and enemies alike, before forcing Brutaka to tell them where the Mask of Life was hidden.

After awakening, the Piraka and Toa Inika forged a temporary truce, in order to beat the two traitorous Piraka. Upon arriving where the two Piraka had gone, they found that the Piraka had yet again turned on each other and were in the midst of beating each other into a pulp. The truce broken, the Toa and Piraka battled each other, and, in the end, the Toa succeeded in giving the Brutaka's power back to the owner, and all the combatants, except for Zaktan, were rendered unconscious.

Upon waking up, the Toa Inika found the Piraka to be gone, and the secret entrance to the 777 Step Staircase leading to the Mask of Life open. Upon going down the staircase, the Toa found themselves in a chamber surrounded by villains of the past: a Turahk, a Gahlok-Kal, a Muaka, a Bohrok, a Nui-Rama, and, at the head, Teridax. When they fought their past enemies, they found that, although not meaning to, they killed them all. When they got ready to leave, they saw the forms of the assorted villains turning into the Toa Nuva. Believing they killed their friends, the Toa Inika considered ending their mission to save Mata Nui's life, wondering if they would end up killing the Great Spirit instead of reviving him. A decision to go on was reached, and, as the Toa prepared to leave, they found that, in truth, the whole thing had been an illusion. Lightened by this prospect, the Toa continued their journey.

Soon, the staircase led them to the Chamber of Death, where a voice told them that if the Toa wished to continue their journey, one of their number would have to die. Before Jaller could speak up, Matoro volunteered, to the others' dismay. In a flash of light, Matoro was killed, and brought back to life. The voice said that it was not the prospect of death that made a difference, it was the willing to die for one's cause that did. The passageway in front of them opened again, and Matoro took the lead.

Within minutes, the group found themselves under attack by vicious creatures called Protodax. However, they were soon 'saved' by a being called Umbra. Their savior, however, proved to be another guardian of the mask, one that left the Protodax to kill the mindless Rahi; those of spirit were his to kill. A brief fight ensued, and, through cunning, the Toa Inika were able to beat Umbra back, and continued their journey.

Leaving the chamber, the group was at last to the final part of the journey, the gateway to the Mask of Life. Jaller noticed that the Piraka had already created outposts on the Bridge, so he ordered Hewkii to summon an earthquake to knock the Piraka off their feet. The group charged, while the Piraka scattered. As Kongu summoned a wind to disperse Zaktan's particles, Jaller cried out a late warning. The wind ripped through the bridge, burying the Toa Inika underneath in rubble.

When they woke up, the Toa resolved to do whatever it took to stop the villains, even if they would have to kill them. The Toa tore down the door leading to the Chamber of Life, and found four of the Piraka unconscious, and a fused monster bearing down on them. Vezon fired a beam from his Spear of Fusion, unfusing the beast into two unconscious Piraka. A battle ensued between the Toa Inika and Vezon, riding his monstrous steed, Fenrakk. Eventually, the Toa knocked the duo into the lava.

As Jaller steeled himself to jump into the lava and grab the Mask of Life, Vezon rose again, this time riding the Kardas Dragon. A devastating battle began, and it was only due to the timely actions of Jaller that the other Toa Inika survived. He loaded a Zamor Sphere that Axonn had gave him, and fired. Vezon and Kardas were frozen in time, and Matoro went to Vezon, and pulled off the Mask of Life. However, Vezon and Kardas were unfrozen a few moments later, and Kardas unleashed a devastating blast of energy that blew the Mask out of Matoro's hands.

The revived Piraka and Toa chased after the mask, which eventually went under the sea. Hahli attempted to follow, but was nearly killed by the pressure of the water. A Matoran saved her, and, consequently died himself. Reunited with the Toa Nuva, the two teams of Toa exchanged good lucks and farewells, before the Toa Inika went down The Cord, to chase after the Mask of Life.

Inside the Cord, the Toa Inika fought off hordes of Zyglak, Vezon, who was carried off by the Zyglak, and, while Matoro used his mask, Teridax himself inhabited Matoro's body. The Toa Inika threatened to kill Matoro's body, and Teridax fled in his Antidermis form. After recovering Hahli's stolen mask, the group found themselves in the Mutagenic Water. Within seconds, however, the Mask of Life transformed the group of Toa into new forms, the Toa Mahri, whom continued to chase the Mask of Life in the depths of the sea.

Special Powers

  • The Toa Inika were impervious to Antidermis. The lightning with which they were charged counteracted the virus.
  • The Toa Inika's Elemental Powers were all permanently entwined with Lightning, which meant that they could not separate their Elemental Power from the Lightning. For example, Jaller couldn't control Lightning or Fire independent of one another.
  • When the Inika's masks were removed, a painfully bright light shone from their heads, making their facial features indistinguishable.

The Toa Inika sets.

The Toa Inika were released as sets in late 2006. They wore rubber masks symbolizing their new organic masks. Their heads were originally planned to glow in the dark to represent the blinding and distorting glow of the Inika's facial features, but in the actual sets they are lime green blended with white, despite promotional material that maintained that they were in fact glow-in-the-dark. The tools of the Toa Inika featured battery-powered strobe lights in varying colors, and each set came packaged with four Zamor spheres in the closest matching colors to the tool's light. The Toa Inika's Zamor sphere launchers also featured a new part that acted as a cartridge for their Zamor spheres.

Quotes

"Well, I've always wondered what it would be like to become a Toa. Somehow, I never pictured blinding features and moving masks. Think we can get a do-over?"
— Nuparu, Power Play

Trivia

  • In the BIONICLE: The Quest Game board game, the Toa Inika were given nicknames like the Piraka. These nicknames, like the Piraka's, are non-canon to the storyline.
