When the Mahri Nui landmass broke off of Voya Nui and tumbled into the ocean, it collided with the Fields of Air, dislodging the plants' air bubbles and saving the Matoran population and their village. Over the next 300 or so years, the Matoran of Mahri Nui tamed and trained the Hydruka to harvest the air bubbles on the Airweed. Because this process was so essential to the Matoran's survival, the post of Hydruka Guard was developed. After witnessing the Hydruka's defense mechanism, launching Solidified Air Bubbles at their enemies, the Matoran were inspired to develop the Air Launcher technology that they used to defend the city.
Abilities and Traits
Hydruka are able to differentiate strands of Airweed that contain viable air bubbles from those that do not. Hydruka defend themselves by firing Solidified Air Bubbles generated by an anatomical element in their tails, and some have bioluminescent carapaces that glow in areas of low light. They possess a natural immunity to the Pit Mutagen. Hydruka are also the preferred prey of Venom Eels.
Hydruka are notoriously sensitive, irritable, and temperamental. Attempts to rush their harvests would frighten or anger them, and they must be allowed to work at their own pace. The Matoran of Mahri often gave them names to be able to better identify each specimen and keep track of the herds.

Morak and Thulox were each released as small sets in spring 2007, simultaneously with the Matoran Dekar and Defilak. They consisted of 40 parts and 39 parts, respectively, including in each a dark silver Air Launcher and two Solidified Air Bubbles. Morak chiefly features dark blue armor as well as a new armor piece (released the same year in Takadox and Nocturn) in a blend of transparent blue and glow-in-the-dark plastic. Thulox primarily features dark red armor (on his anterior half) and black armor (on his rear legs) separated by a new armor piece also featured in the Kalmah set and blended from dark red and black plastic.
- Due to the major cuts done to the story in 2007, Morak was never seen in any comics or books. However, Morak did have an entry in the BIONICLE: Encyclopedia Updated.
- BIONICLE Legends 6: City of the Lost
- BIONICLE Legends 8: Downfall (Mentioned Only)

- Barraki Platform Game (Non-canonical Appearance)
