The Pit is run by the Order of Mata Nui, with member Hydraxon acting as the jailer. He is helped by many Maxilos robots, some of which use Energy Hounds. These robots were built on Artakha.
The Pit was in a dome, just like the rest of the underground islands.
The Inner Pit was destroyed due to the Great Cataclysm allowing the prisoners to escape to the Outer Pit. There, due to exposure to the water, they were mutated by the water to water-breathing beings. The Barraki and their ally Nocturn stayed in the Outer Pit and became its rulers, while the other prisoners fled. One Maxilos stayed in the Pit with Spinax, who formerly belonged to Hydraxon. The other robots went pursuing other escaped prisoners. A group of Zyglak moved to the old Pit, for nothing else really lived down there.
When the Order of Mata Nui used the Staff of Artakha to repair the universe, the Pit was also restored, although it is still flooded. Hydraxon and Spinax have begun hunting down escaped prisoners, as has Toa Lesovikk and his Matoran friend Sarda.

The Pit itself is filled with jail cells that were destroyed by the Great Cataclysm, but have since been restored. It is, however, still flooded.
The sea around The Pit is black and filled with danger. Here, four of the Barraki live, along with many other mutated beings who now wander along it's seabeds. Ehlek also built a base here, although it was destroyed when Mahri Nui sank. The walls of the Outer Pit are riddled with caves, including Octo Cave, Takadox's luminescent cave, a cave used by Pridak to interrogate Defilak and his company, and a cave used by Sarda to set a trap for Karzahni.
