The Sun Holes are holes in the Dome of an island which allows sunlight from the Endless Ocean Planet to pass into the Matoran Universe, and also function as Mata Nui's "eyes". The only Sun Holes are the two on the dome of Metru Nui or otherwise the base of Mata Nui. These holes are barricaded with energy to prevent substances from above to leak down.
They were created by the Great Beings and, despite being energy, are solid enough not to let solid objects or liquids through them. This was demonstrated during the Great Cataclysm when one was covered by a glacier on Mount Ihu and the other was covered by the coral and dirt that accumulated at the bottom of Naho Bay.
