Shadow is both an Element and a non-elemental power. Those who naturally wield this Element are inherently corrupted.
Species Wielders
- Shadow Matoran represent the Element of Shadow and contain a small amount of Elemental Shadow energy, to the extent that they can fire Shadow bolts. Matoran of Shadow are not naturally created, having lost their light.
- A Toa of Shadow possesses the Elemental Power of Shadow, allowing them to create, control and absorb Shadow. Their only real limitation would be that when they run out of Elemental Shadow Energy, they would have to wait for it to recharge.
- A Turaga of Shadow would hypothetically have small traces of Elemental Shadow energy.

Other
- Shadow Stealer has a limited range of Shadow powers.
- Virtually any being of any species can become drained of a portion of their light by an Avsa, Shadow Leeches, or Gorast's stinger. Doing so will give the being limited shadow powers.

Trivia
- While it is considered an Element, no Toa can naturally wield Shadow because it is inherently evil, and Toa are by definition good. If a Matoran becomes a Shadow Matoran, though, they are capable of transforming into a Toa of Shadow. The same is true if a Toa has their light drained.
- Shadow was originally considered to have no moral connotations; being no more good or evil than any other element. It only became associated with evil after the Brotherhood of Makuta's corruption.
- With training and focus, especially on the associated emotions of anger and aggression, any being can develop Shadow powers. The same can be done with the opposing element of Light, although the nature of Shadow's emotions make it inherently easier to tap into.
- Shadow is very strong against Light and vice versa.
- Shadow allows for male and female Matoran, Toa, and Turaga of Shadow.
- This Element can be combined with other Toa Elements (except Light) to create a Seal.
- Any being that has had part of their Light drained by a Shadow Leech will not be able to regenerate their Light, because a mental barrier is then created that prevents it from doing so. The only known cure is a Klakk's sonic scream. If all their Light is used up, they become a being of Shadow. Gorast's stinger and the Kanohi Avsa, however, have no long-term effect unless the Light drain is total.
- Roodaka, Sentrakh, and Shadow Stealer all have non-Elemental Shadow powers.
