The Bohrok-Kal threat had been diminished, and the Matoran had rebuilt their bodies. Jaller was looking for his friend, Takua on the day of the Kolhii championship. Takua and Pewku were down in a volcano hidden beneath a rock, looking at a totem. It had strange symbols marked on it.
Takua jumped across the rocks, when Jaller found him and tried to shout at him, to come back. But Takua went all the way to the other side and took the totem off the shrine. A sudden quake from an eruption knocked Takua off his feet, sending him sprawling face down, while the totem rolled into the lava, and sank to Takua's dismay. Much to his surprise, the totem floated back to the surface, revealing the Mask of Light. Upon noticing the lava wave separating him and Jaller, Takua threw the Avohkii at Jaller. Takua then took out his Lava Board, and jumped into the lava. Floating on the board, Takua tried to cross the lava before any of it reached him. Unfortunately, Takua failed. Just when the wave almost crashed on Takua, a red figure zoomed by and picked him up. To Jaller, Takua seemingly died. Meanwhile Tahu Nuva put Takua on his shoulders and continued to surf down the lava falls. The falls were near. Tahu surfed off the falls, and started to glide down. After what seemed like minutes, Tahu separated his board into his twin Magma Swords. Upon doing this, he stuck the swords into the rock, while the lava was coming down fast. Tahu Nuva activated his Kanohi Hau Nuva to protect him and Takua from their melting doom. Tahu climbed up the remainder of the way.
After arriving, Jaller thought that Takua was dead. He was bound to be wrong, for there he was, Takua, jumping off. Tahu then caught a glimpse of the great Mask of Light. Telling the Matoran to see it to Turaga Vakama, but after the Kolhii match. And so Takua and Jaller ran to the Kolhii stadium as fast as they could. They got there just in time, as the door opened just as they ran out of it. During the match, Takua tried his newest move but failed miserably. The Kolhii ball nearly hit Vakama in the mask. Ta-Koro eventually lost; the score was 2 to Ga-Koro, 1 to Po-Koro and 0 to Ta-Koro. The Kolhii players took their bows, and the Avohkii fell out of Takua's backpack.
After spending a lot of time passing it to and from each other, Takua tipped it slightly, making it shine all its light on Jaller. The Toa and Turaga took this as a sign that Jaller was meant to be the Herald of The Seventh Toa. So they sent Jaller of on the mission to find the seventh Toa. Jaller managed to make sure that Takua came with him though. Meanwhile, in Teridax's lair, evil stirred. Teridax had found out about the discovery of the mask of light and was quite nervous. So he sent three of his Rahkshi, Lerahk, Panrahk and Guurahk to stop Jaller and Takua.
Back in Ta-Koro, the Toa were taking their leaves. Pohatu went to spread the news of the Seventh Toa to Onu-Koro, while Gali went to ponder the Great Thoughts at Kini-Nui. She saw a seventh spirit star, a true sign that the Toa of Light was coming. Suddenly, from behind Gali, the Kini-Nui split open. After the debris died down out of nowhere came an eerie hand. Then the Rahkshi appeared. Three of them jumped from the whole that was made when Kini-Nui exploded. One of the Rahkshi, Panrahk, saw Gali and tried to destroy her with its powers. Gali managed to jump in a river in time, but Rahkshi didn't know that she had survived. So the Rahkshi shifted into flight mode and started flying towards Ta-Koro. Gali followed them and passed them by swimming in the river.
Gali got to Ta-Koro before the Rahkshi. She ran and summoned Turaga and Tahu. After a moment of silence, the Rahkshi appeared from the clouds. Vakama and Nokama remembered the Rahkshi from their past and were traumatized. Tahu tried to stop the Rahkshi, but even his Hau Nuva shield wasn't enough to protect him from the attack from Panrahk. Tahu fell, unconscious. Gali ran to her brother and tried to stop the Rahkshi, but was almost thrown into the hot lava below.
The Rahkshi continued to search for the Mask of Light and the herald in Ta-Koro. All the Matoran ran around in panic as these creatures blew off walls to find what they were told to look for. Lerahk was closing on to the escaping Hahli but Gali came and pulled her to safety just in time. As Lerahk was looking for Hahli, Gali told Hahli to save the Matoran. Hahli did this by opening the gates of Ta-Koro so that the Matoran could flee. This worked and the Matoran ran out of the village of fire. Meanwhile, after Tahu had trapped Panrahk in a ring of fire, Lerahk attacked Tahu. It had first challenged Turaga Vakama but Tahu had fended it off and saved Vakama. Gali was at the gates sending the Matoran out. Then she saw Lerahk and Tahu fighting. She quickly took her tools and shot water, but failed as Tahu managed to get the upper hand, catching the full blast, getting Tahu's mask scratched by Lerahk's staff as well.. Then Lerahk stood up and poisoned the whole floor of Ta-Koro. Gali and Tahu escaped, but Ta-Koro sank into the lava.
Once safe on the land of Ta-Wahi, the two Toa and Vakama watched sadly as the village of fire sank into the lava. Then they saw all the three Rahkshi fly away. Tahu wondered, why didn't the Rahkshi destroy them, even though they could've done so. Vakama told him that they were seekers and just didn't find what they were looking for. Gali wondered what the Rahkshi were looking for but Vakama told them that they were after the Mask of Light. Tahu remembered Takua and Jaller and wanted to go and help them himself, but Gali didn't agree on Tahu going alone.
Meanwhile Takua and Jaller were in Le-Wahi, riding on Pewku to search for the Toa of Light. Takua was complaining about bugs and all the other things in Le-Wahi, but Jaller said that it was a nice place and that Takua was never comfortable anywhere. Suddenly, they were interrupted when a Graalok Ash Bear attacked them. Jaller, Takua and Pewku tried to escape but they were cornered. Jaller then boldly jumped off the faithful Ussal crab and started to climb up into a tree. Graalok's attention was now on Jaller. Jaller jumped down and landed on Graalok's back. It tried to get Jaller off, but suddenly vines appeared from the trees which trapped the Graalok.
Jaller fell down and Lewa Nuva swung himself from the trees with a vine. He then released Graalok and it walked away. But when Lewa heard of the Mask of Light, he decided to help Jaller and Takua, and summoned a Gukko bird. He put Jaller and Takua on it and went flying, with Jaller and Takua following him. However, Pewku couldn't come with them. Takua ordered her to go home, but Pewku was sad and decided to follow her friends secretly.
Takua and Jaller rode the Gukko bird up to Ko-Wahi, where the Gukko crashed in landing. After getting up from their impact and brushing the snow off themselves, Lewa said that the drums of Le-Koro were bringing news of despair: Ta-Koro was destroyed in a battle against the Rahkshi; the Teridax's sons. Grief-stricken, Jaller comments that he should have been there, and decides that he must return, only to have Lewa remark that it was too late to help and that the Mask of Light needed him to continue the search for the Seventh Toa. Jaller then pushes the Mask into Takua's hands, announcing that he would continue in Jaller's place, only to have the Chronicler push it back in his grasp and tell him that he had accepted his Duty--While Jaller argued that he had accepted Takua's duty. Lewa stepped into the argument and told them that they all had a duty to Mata Nui and that there was no time to fight. Lewa also promised Jaller that after he joined the Toa, he would go see his village. After having Jaller thanking him, Lewa took off, and Takua and Jaller continued on their quest. At this point in time, the poison from Lerahk began to spread through Tahu's Hau Nuva.
Walking through a snowstorm in Ko Wahi, they seemingly stumble upon some Bohrok, only to find that they were frozen---by Kopaka Nuva. Kopaka stopped the snowstorm, and the pair followed Kopaka, filling him in on their quest to find the Toa of Light as they walked. The scene turns back to Tahu and Gali; this time, they were joined by Lewa. Tahu mourns about the loss of Ta Koro, and Gali starts to notice the wound Lerahk inflicted upon Tahu, and attempts to examine it more closely. However, Tahu swats her hand aside, stating that she worries about scratches, while his village is gone. Lewa tried to comfort Tahu, and Gali attempted to bring them together by talking about Unity; but Tahu put her hand aside again and walked away alone. Meanwhile, Jaller and Takua travel along Kopaka, and Kopaka spots Ko-Koro. After focusing on the door with his Akaku Nuva, he finds out that the door is broken; a bolt of energy is fired from there, and Kopaka barely got Jaller and Takua out of the way. Three Rahkshi appear, then Kopaka Nuva threw his Ice Shield down and told them to go. Jaller protested against that act of cowardice, stating that 'The Captain of the guard never runs away', but is cut short by Takua, who pushed him onto the shield and started to slide down the mountain.
Kopaka attempts to hold off the three Rahkshi, but is blasted off the mountain by Panrahk. Kopaka started to skate down the mountain on his Ice Blades, while dodging blasts from the Rahkshi. Suddenly, Takua spotted a dead end, and Kopaka attempts to pick his shield up and toss the pair over with it; however, the Rahkshi blast them off their feet, and Kopaka crash-lands, with his ice blades narrowly missing him, and he also gets the wind knocked out of him. The Rahkshi spot their prey, and zoom down the mountain. In the meantime, Takua desperately tries to wake Jaller up, Jaller regains consciousness, and the pair spot the Rahkshi. In an attempt to lure the Rahkshi away from Jaller, Takua pushes Kopaka's shield into a lake, and tries to escape using the Avohkii as a paddle. As the Rahkshi approached, Jaller covered his eyes in fear; however, the Rahkshi did not have any interest in him, and headed straight for Takua. Fortunately, Kopaka regains consciousness, and fires an elemental blast towards the Rahkshi, just as they were about to grab the mask. Kopaka then proceeds to freeze the lake, freezing Panrahk's hand as well when he tried to make a last grab for the mask.
Then Pewku came running towards Takua and knocked him down. She was so excited to see her owner. While they greeted each other, Kopaka left, without saying anything. After long walking Takua and Jaller came to a cave. Inside, Takua and Jaller quickly got lost and separated from each other. Then Teridax talked to Takua in a vision, warning him that if he didn't give the mask of light to Teridax, Jaller would die. Takua refused and the vision ended. Jaller then found Takua but they parted ways, as Takua quit the search, taking Pewku with her. After a while, the three Rahkshi manage to escape the Ice.
Meanwhile Tahu and Gali surf on a tidal wave towards three Rahkshi, Guurahk, Panrahk and Lerahk. Tahu jumps off the wave on a cliff, which is quickly poisoned by Lerahk. Tahu falls down painfully, and Lerahk comes over Tahu, ready to finish the job. But Tahu rolled quickly out of the way and got up, preparing himself for a fight. Meanwhile Gali was confronting Guurahk. Guurahk quickly disintegrated the ground beneath Gali. She however grabbed from the edge of the hole she was falling into. But Guurahk was going to knock her down... then Lewa swung himself on the Rahkshi's back before it got a chance to drop the Toa of water into the hole. The Guurahk however shook him quickly off. Lerahk then poisoned all the ground around the three Toa, trapping them to a corner. The Rahkshi then brought the cliffside down on the Toa together, Lerahk poisoning the rocks. Tahu used his mask of shielding which saved all of them but the Rahkshi of course didn't know this. They just flew away, continuing towards Po-Koro.
Teridax decided to unleash three more Rahkshi, and he released Turahk, Vorahk and Kurahk. Meanwhile Whenua decided to show Onua and Pohatu the cavern where he, along with the other Turaga had stored captured Kraata. Then the Rahkshi came and blasted all the Kraata containers open, freeing them. The Kraata started slithering towards the two Toa and the Turaga... Kopaka arrived to a meeting place near Po-Koro where he and the other Toa were supposed to have a meeting. No-one is been seen around and then suddenly all the six Rahkshi arrived, cornering him. He tried to fight of the Rahkshi but he wasn't even a challenge against all the six Rahkshi. Tahu, Gali and Lewa came to his aid however, they had escaped from the rocks, Tahu's Hau Nuva had protected them. But Tahu and Gali began to fight because of Kurahk’s anger powers. Lewa used a mini cyclone to take Kurahk’s staff from it, distracting it. Gali quickly acted and started to drown the white Rahkshi in water while helping Kopaka out. Panrahk and Guurahk tried to bring a cliffside on these two Toa again but Lewa rescued them with his wind powers while Tahu turned the rocks into magma. The Rahkshi then escaped.
Then suddenly Pohatu and Onua emerged from the cavern with Whenua. Tahu and Kopaka sealed the cavern so that the Kraata were once more trapped. Only one Kraata had escaped, a Shadow Kraata. Pohatu caught it before it could infect any masks and Whenua told the Toa about it. The Toa then left Turaga to deal with the Kraata while they went to find and stop the Rahkshi. Pohatu and Onua went to Onu-Koro.
Soon in Onu-Koro, Pohatu was spreading the news of the mask of light. He was telling all the Onu-Matoran about Jaller's and Takua's search for the seventh Toa when suddenly Takua arrived on the back of Pewku. Pohatu asked Takua why he was alone and Takua told him about the Rahkshi. All of Onu-Koro was shaken suddenly and a wall exploded. Three new Rahkshi came out: Turahk, Vorahk and Kurahk. Takua stated that these were different Rahkshi than the ones he had met. Pohatu and Onua began fighting the Rahkshi off, Onua starting with an earthquake that slowed the Rahkshi, giving the Matoran some time to run away from Onu-Koro. However, the rocks that buried the Rahkshi didn't hold them off for long; the Rahkshi brushed the rocks off, and Vorahk started to fight Onua. At first, Onua had the upper hand, but Vorahk's staff of Hunger slowly sucked the energy out of Onua, eventually weakening him so much he lost consciousness. Pohatu came to his aid, but Turahk blasted him, leaving him in a state of fear, deprived of the ability to move.
As Takua was escaping, he came to realize that what he was doing was wrong; he grabbed a Kolhii staff nearby, and attempted to hit Kurahk with it, but Kurahk merely grabbed the staff and screamed at him. The other Rahkshi, hearing the scream, gathered around to finish Takua off. Tahu Nuva suddenly appeared, and tried to fend them off; but a blast from Kurahk left him lying on the ground.
Just as things were looking very grim for Takua, Lewa Nuva appeared, flying away with Takua and Pewku on his back; after they landed, he instructed Takua to warn Jaller, and they parted ways, with Takua escaping on Pewku, and Lewa Nuva flying back to the battle. Meanwhile, Gali, concerned about Tahu's condition, attempted to help him up; but the combined effects of Lerahk's poison and Kurahk's anger had made Tahu unable to distinguish friend from foe, and he attempted to blast Gali with fire, saying: “Fire has no brother; Fire consumes ALL!" Gali dodged out of the way, and saw that Tahu now wore an infected mask. At the same time, Takua was making his escape through an Onu-Koro chute on Pewku, but the Rahkshi wasn't going to let him escape so easily, and Turahk punched a hole through the chute, narrowly missing Takua. Turahk and the other Rahkshi continued to climb along the outside of the chute in pursuit of Takua; However, Pohatu and Onua had regained their power, and Pohatu pinned Turahk on the chute with his claws. As the other two Rahkshi came running towards them, Onua unleashed a cave in on them, also destroying Onu-Koro in the process.
At the other side of Onu-Koro, the battle between Gali and Tahu raged on; Gali tried to make Tahu remember that he was a Toa, but she failed in doing that. Tahu slowly made his way through Gali's water blast, but was finally stopped by Kopaka Nuva, who froze him in place. Gali, Kopaka and Lewa swiftly moved Tahu out of Onu-Koro, to Le-Wahi. They decided to use their healing powers to save Tahu, who was still struggling against his bonds. Gali first told Kopaka and Lewa to use their powers to stop Tahu from struggling so much, and as Tahu writhed in pain under the combined powers of Lewa and Kopaka, Gali couldn't take it anymore and told them to stop. Then, Gali released a small pool of water, which covered Tahu's body; as it vanished, Tahu's eyes no longer glowed green, and his mask was normal again. However, Gali was also completely exhausted, and Kopaka had to catch her just as she was falling to the ground. Afterwards, Gali was replenishing her elemental energy by a river, and she wondered aloud if the Toa Nuva had really lost their unity, just like the Turaga had said; but Kopaka was nowhere to be found, as Gali asked for his opinion.
Meanwhile, things weren't going very well for Jaller; as he climbed up a tall mountain, he found out that there was much more to go. He climbed onto a ledge, lamenting, "Mata Nui, where does my destiny lie?" A sudden quake on the mountain throws him off his feet, and he nearly loses the Mask of Light. As Jaller hangs on the ledge for dear life, a shadow approaches....and it turns out to be none other than Takua, and his faithful Ussal crab, Pewku. Takua helped Jaller up with his Kolhii staff, and Jaller teased him about his last words before he left, "I quit"; slightly embarrassed, Takua explained that there were more Rahkshi, and that they were after the herald.
Meanwhile Kopaka, Lewa and Tahu encountered a part of Le-Wahi devastated by some unknown power. They soon found two Matoran who's masks had been infected. Kopaka temporarily trapped them in a wall of ice, then shortly afterwards the Toa encountered a shadow Kraata which had infected those two Matoran's masks. They captured it but realized that it must have been some other creature that had destroyed a part of Le-Wahi. They gave a chase, just to find both Rahkshi Kaita. The Toa eventually defeated them, although Lewa was almost lost because he had underestimated the enemy’s power.
After traveling, Takua and Jaller found themselves at the temple of Kini-Nui. They knew that the seventh Toa must be there but Takua got frustrated and grabbed the Avohkii from Jaller and started to shake it in hope that it would show them where the seventh Toa would be. The mask started to glow brightly and suddenly it destroyed a part of a statue of a Toa head, revealing a part of a statue of Takua's mask (which Takanuva later reveals with his light powers). Then three Rahkshi attacked from behind of the statue. Turahk, Vorahk and Kurahk went after Jaller and Takua who ran to Amaja-Nui, only to find out that their only escape route is blocked by Lerahk, Guurahk and Panrahk, rest of the six Rahkshi.
Noting the danger, the two Matoran stood back to back with Jaller taking out his knife in attempt to protect himself. Just before the Rahkshi could attack them however, 3 spots of light appeared on a nearby mountain which revealed to be Tahu, Gali and Lewa. The three Toa jumped into a ring position around the Toa and Tahu said "We are done running". Almost straight afterwards, a fist breaks out through the ground and the rest of the Toa Nuva, Onua, Pohatu and Kopaka appear, completing the circle of six. The Toa united and formed a shield around them and the Matoran, shielding themselves from the attacks of the Rahkshi. Afterwards, the shield was lowered and then Toa started their attack on the Rahkshi.
Lewa started by making a hurricane of sand which took Guurahk, Panrahk and Lerahk with it. Meanwhile Gali jumped out of the circle and dodged the Rahkshi's hits. Then Kurahk accidentally slammed it's stuff on Turahk, which fell down, temporarily out of the fight. Meanwhile Tahu had come next to Lewa and shot fire at the sand tornado, and we all know that sand and fire... together make glass. The three Rahkshi which had a second before been trapped in a tornado were now trapped in glass. They were now out... for good.
Kopaka meanwhile distracted the two remaining Rahkshi, Kurahk and Vorahk as Pohatu bound their hands together with his claws. The Rahkshi were bound to each other now and Onua threw a chunk of land towards the Rahkshi. Before it fell on them, Tahu used his fire powers to make the chunk of land into hot, molten lava which landed on the Rahkshi. Gali shot water on the two almost defeated Rahkshi which enabled Kopaka to freeze them. All the Rahkshi were defeated... or almost all of them.
Takua and Jaller, who had watched the battle soon saw the Turahk climbing to the Amaja-Nui. They tried to run away, but Turahk blasted Takua who had the mask, stopping him as fear deprived his ability to move. Jaller then saw his friend's danger and quickly jumped on the Turahk's stuff, taking all the fear energy to himself. This however overwhelmed Jaller and he collapsed, his Heartlight flashing rapidly. Takua ran to his friend, just to realize he was witnessing his friend's death. Jaller’s last words were: "You know who you are. You were... always... different..." then Jaller grabbed the mask of light and gave it to Takua. Then he died. Takua realized his Destiny and placed the mask of light on his own face. Then a bright light shined as Takua transformed into the Toa of light. He renamed himself Takanuva, froze the Turahk Rahkshi suit and blasted the Toa head statue with his light powers, illuminating his past mask, the Kanohi Pakari. Takanuva picked up Jaller's lifeless body, and silently walked away.Later, Takanuva is standing in front of Jaller's mask, which was floating in a beam of light. He asks himself, 'All this, just to discover who I am?" Vakama walked up to him, and they talked about his destiny. Takanuva, full of resolution after the conversation, turned back to the beam of light and vowed that Jaller's sacrifice would not be in vain.
At Kini Nui, the Toa Nuva built the Ussanui. Takanuva placed the Shadow Kraata inside a trunk of the Ussanui, saying that it will lead him to Teridax. Hahli walked towards the Ussanui, placing Jaller's mask on it, and wished Takanuva good luck. Pohatu asked Takanuva about where they were going to sit on the Ussanui, and Takanuva told the Toa Nuva that he was going alone, and told them to gather the Matoran and wait for his return.
Takanuva activated the Ussanui, and sped down Kini-Nui to the entrance of the Mangaia; he crashed the Ussanui into the door, breaking it down as well. Hahli emerged from the debris, and said that she will write the chronicle for Takanuva. Takanuva has no choice but to let her come along, and he grabbed the Shadow Kraata as they went in. It was dark in the lair and green mist floated everywhere. The pillars where the Rahkshi had been stored earlier were spotted. Takanuva slammed the shadow Kraata on the floor and it slithered away into the darkness, screeching. Takanuva then heard Teridax's voice and he soon came out of the darkness and illuminated himself to Takanuva and Hahli. Takanuva ordered Hahli to go back to the surface, and summon all the Matoran down there. Hahli left and Teridax challenged Takanuva in a game of Kolhii. The game soon became intense and dangerous as the "Kolhii balls" started smashing the pillars.
At the surface, Onewa was unsure about going down. Hahli, however had a motivating speech and the Matoran, Toa and the Turaga all went down to Teridax's lair. There they saw Teridax throwing the balls towards Takanuva, trying to hit him with them. When Teridax saw the Matoran, he quickly threw a ball to the entrance, bringing it down. The Matoran were trapped inside Teridax's lair with Takanuva. Then Takanuva caught a Protodermis ball and flung it towards Teridax. It hit him and sent him flying and smashing into a wall. Teridax arose soon after, but Takanuva jumped on Teridax and pulled his mask, the Kanohi Kraahkan, off. Both fell into the Energized Protodermis pool in the center of the lair. After a moment, Takutanuva arose from the pool. Light and shadow had become one. Takutanuva opened the heavy gate to Metru Nui and the Matoran along with Toa Nuva and Turaga ran through it. However, Takutanuva stopped Hahli, who carried Jaller's mask. He gave some of his own life energy to bring Jaller back to life; but this loss of energy weakened Takutanuva, and the gate crashed on him. However, the Avohkii slid beneath the door over to the Matoran. Turaga Vakama took the mask and went to the symbol of the three virtues. He placed Jaller on the spot for Duty, Hahli on the one for Unity, and the Avohkii on the one for Destiny. A light started to shine from the mask and Takanuva was revived, alive and well. Vakama then showed everyone Metru Nui, which was seen far away in the Protodermis sea.
Everyone got back to the surface and Vakama started to tell the Legends of Metru Nui to the Toa while the Matoran constructed Boats. After many weeks, they took off and arrived to Metru Nui, greeted by the Rahaga and Turaga Dume.
