Rahkshi are suits of armor created when a Kraata is immersed in Energized Protodermis. There are a total of forty-two types of Rahkshi, each with a unique power that varies greatly from the others.
History
The earliest mention of the Brotherhood of Makuta using Rahkshi was during the Battle Against the Barraki, eighty thousand years prior to the Great Cataclysm. During that time, the Makuta could not create Kraata as easily as they can in current times; they were forced to use a longer, less efficient process that produced inferior Kraata, and therefore inferior Rahkshi. After their evolution into Antidermis completed, the Makuta were able to produce Kraata much more easily, and so Rahkshi became much more potent. The Brotherhood has made constant use of them ever since, using them in most military operations, ranging from the Raid of Artakha to attacks on Dark Hunter positions. They are also used as guards at Brotherhood locations, such as Destral, where they have been taught to recognize Tablets of Transit and capture, rather than kill, unauthorized creatures.
Over the years, many different Rahkshi have been created; not all have purposes, so they simply wander from island to island. A substantial number ended up on Metru Nui, where they were either captured and placed in stasis in the Archives or driven into the Fikou Web. The Brotherhood also sent an army of Rahkshi to an unnamed southern island so they can train there. Recently, Axonn and Brutaka went there with an army of Skakdi, which they used to fight the Rahkshi.

When Teridax took over the body of Mata Nui, he used a group of Rahkshi to terrorize the Toa, Turaga, and Matoran of Metru Nui.
Abilities and Traits
To create a Rahkshi, two Kraata of the same power type are required, though level does not matter. One of these is put into Energized Protodermis, where it undergoes a change of the most exotic nature: from organic living matter to a non-living, inorganic "shell" — the Rahkshi's body. The other Kraata then crawls inside the Rahkshi and can control it. Rahkshi are incapable of operating on their own. The Rahkshi amplifies the Kraata's powers, although its effectiveness still depends on the Kraata's level. Most Rahkshi channel their powers directly through the staffs that they carry; some, like heat vision and heat resistance Rahkshi, do not do so, though their staffs still aid their powers. Their powers are considerably weakened without their staffs, so it is standard procedure for Matoran to lock away their staffs elsewhere when storing them in the Archives. All Rahkshi also have the ability to fly, and to climb walls.
Rahkshi are naturally destructive, often going out of their way to cause as much damage as possible. When they are acting under orders, this instinct is channeled towards one objective, making them extremely dangerous. When they are not under orders, or 'wild,' as it is called, they are much less focused, making them still dangerous, but easier to defeat. This is evidenced in how six Rahkshi under orders were able to hold off the Toa Nuva, while Toa Nokama was able to defeat three 'wild' Rahkshi on her own and with little Elemental Power, though they will still attack and destroy anything. 'Wild' Rahkshi are also naturally territorial, attacking anything that invades their territory, even other RahkshiRahkshi which are under orders have no self-regard, no matter how well-developed their intelligence is. An example is when Teridax ordered all the Rahkshi on Metru Nui to provide a distraction by throwing themselves at Voporak. They attacked the Dark Hunter, not stopping even though they were dying without making a single mark on him.
Rahkshi are considered to be a delicacy by Muaka, which will often go out of their way to hunt them down; for this reason, Rahkshi will immediately attack them on sight.
Rahkshi are usually ill-smelling, Vezon particularly feels they smell of cold metal and death.

The Kingdom
In "The Kingdom" Pocket Dimension, when most of the species evacuated to Mata Nui, the Rahkshi were not allowed to come. They tried to get through to the island, and managed to kill Pohatu and Hewkii, but were eventually driven off by Tahu, Jaller, and Kopaka. 10,000 years later, Teridax managed to create for the Rahkshi shadow armor that lasted just long enough to get through the light barrier. One Rahkshi, a Panrahk, got through and was instantly killed by the Dark Hunters. This caused concern among the ruling council. When Takanuva, Tanma, and Matoro went down into Mata Nui's tunnels, they could find no sign of the Rahkshi. Right as they were about to leave, Matoro was suddenly attacked by four Rahkshi, with more coming through the barrier. Takanuva and Tanma returned to help, and the Rahkshi were defeated.

Set Information
The six Rahkshi whose names are known were released as canister sets in late 2003. Each contained 45 pieces including a unique spine and staff ends. Also among these parts was a Kraata of varying level whose power matched the power of the Rahkshi set in which it was contained. Later Rahkshi sets represented the same Rahkshi and contained the same parts but featured a purple stage seven Kraata, or Shadow Kraata, in place of its normal stage 1-6 Kraata. The Kraata could be removed by opening the hatchlike back armor, and an axle on the back allowed the Rahkshi to swing its staff from side to side.
Trivia
- Rahkshi with Heat Vision have a liability to go with it: their eyesight is greatly hindered for a short time after they use their power.
- Spinner and his team fought mutated Rahkshi. Their powers remain unknown.
- Unlike as shown on set canisters and in animations, Rahkshi do not need to drive their staff into the ground to use its power.
