Protodermis is the most common and sometimes the most powerful or enigmatic substance in the BIONICLE universe. Almost everything in BIONICLE is made out of it, including living beings.

In Metru Nui, Protodermis mined in Onu-Metru was purified in Ga-Metru, then taken to Ta-Metru to be made into metal. In Po-Metru and Ta-Metru that metal would be used to make Kanoka disks, masks, and other objects. Large amounts were shipped to Le-Metru to create vehicles and maintain the Chutes.

Protodermis can be created by combining 6 different Elemental Powers. This is because of the Toa Energy in their Elemental Powers. Beings other than Toa cannot combine powers in any way to create Protodermis for this reason. Protodermis made in this way can also be destroyed by focusing the aforementioned powers on it. Besides this, no other way to create this substance is known.

[carve] Liquid Protodermis

• Liquid Protodermis - a clear, silvery substance that could be called the Metru Nui equivalent of water (though Mata Nui has actual water). As such, it plays the same essential role in Matoran life processes as actual water and can be controlled by a Toa of Water. When purified, liquid protodermis gains a slightly blue tint.
• Molten Protodermis - rock-like Protodermis that has been heated. It has the properties of molten metal. It can be called "lava".

[carve] Solid Protodermis

• Solid Rock-like Protodermis - solid Protodermis in the form of rock. It can be controlled by a Toa of Stone. It was mined and collected with a Sluice in Onu-Koro and Onu-Metru. It is also used as a medium for carvings.
• Solid Metal-like Protodermis - hardened purified Protodermis. It can be controlled by a Toa of Iron. The products of Metru Nui's forges, such as Kanoka disks and Kanohi masks, are in this solid form.
• Solid Ice-like Protodermis - frozen liquid Protodermis. It can be controlled by a Toa of Ice.
• Solid Glowing Protodermis - although this is not an official name for the brand of Protodermis, Lightstones are made of glowing Protodermis, or energetic Protodermis, granting them their ability to fill in any surrounding darkness.
• Solid Crystal-like Protodermis - solid crystalline Protodermis. It is used for the same purpose as glass. It can be produced by the staff of The Shadowed One or by six Toa of different elements combining their powers to make a Toa Seal, although it is conventionally made in other ways. It is also what the Bahrag and Teridax were trapped in.
  • It has also been shown that two parts of the same Toa Seal still have some connection. For example, in Web of Shadows, when a small shard of Teridax's prison was destroyed, the rest of the entire prison was also destroyed.

[carve] Special Protodermis

[carve] Energized Protodermis

A rare form that has a special ability: it can mutate anything it touches, but only if it is the destiny of that thing to change. If it is not that being or object's destiny to change, then Energized Protodermis destroys the object.

After a fight with the Bahrag, the Toa Mata fell into Energized Protodermis and were transformed into the Toa Nuva: more powerful versions of themselves with enhanced weapons, masks, armor and powers. On the other hand, Matoran from another land exposed themselves to Energized Protodermis and were transformed into Protocairns, beasts that destroy everything they come across.

Energized Protodermis has led to the creation of several life forms. The Makuta use this to create Rahi by adding different viruses to it. Also, all plant life on Mata Nui was caused by a massive Energized Protodermis leak. Ironically, it also seems to have some living properties itself. A sentient mass of it was discovered by the Toa Metru. No one knows how Energized Protodermis is made; all that is known is that it does not occur naturally. All attempts to reproduce it by Matoran have failed. The only progress they have made is that the Ga-Matoran developed a substance capable of holding Energized Protodermis without noticeably changing or being destroyed; this material is similar to that which makes up Zamor spheres.

Energized Protodermis is also the "cure" for the Antidermis controlling a living being. Since Teridax or other Makuta may not be destined to transform, the Energized Protodermis destroys his/her energies.

[carve] Protosteel

A special form of electricity-conducting Protodermis, Protosteel can be considered a type of Metallic Protodermis. It's the hardest known form of metal in existence, and was created by the artisans of Artakha, though it can also be created by a Toa of Iron and has been utilized by the Nynrah Ghosts; so far, these beings are the only ones that can craft Protosteel. It was to be used in conjunction with Ehlek's species, but the plan was scrapped, though some members of the species, notably Ehlek, still use Protosteel weapons.

Among the different items made of Protosteel are:

• Protosteel Talons carried by Toa Mahri Hahli
• Razor-Edged Protosteel Shield carried by Toa Mahri Nuparu
• Most Order of Mata Nui weapons
• Tri-Talons carried by Ehlek
• Daggers used by Lariska
• The long, thin blade now used by Takadox
• The axe Pohatu uses in the Toa Empire Pocket Dimension
• Adaptive Armor
  • The Toa Nuva's new weapons
  • The Midak Skyblasters used by the Toa Nuva Phantoka

The only known ways to damage Protosteel are with another Protosteel object, a type of armor-eating virus, Tren Krom's and the Shadowed One's disintegrator eyebeams, Pridak's teeth, the heavy doorway between Mangaia and Metru Nui's dome, and the venom of a Keelerak's Rhotuka.

[carve] Tissue-like Protodermis

Tissue-like Protodermis is a kind of Protodermis that makes up all living tissue in the BIONICLE Universe, such as the few species of Organic Rahi in the universe, or simply the muscles of the various races.
