The Place of Shadow is a canyon located on Mata Nui placed on the border between Ko-Wahi and Ta-Wahi, where Makuta Teridax had complete control of the area. Even Tahu was slightly spooked when he journeyed to the dark realm, comparing his journey to the Swamp of Secrets to his experience here, that the balance of the universe felt off.

No Matoran dared to ever ventured to the Place of Shadow, and even the Bohrok swarms avoided this sunless canyon. The Toa Nuva were forced to enter this dark place during their search for the Kanohi Nuva, but had to encounter the Rahi Nui because of their team falling into a trap sprung by Teridax. Only Turaga Vakama was able to defeat it, using his Kanohi Huna, and allow the Toa to leave the area unharmed. Aside from the Rahi Nui, no other Rahi dwelt in the place of shadow.
The Place of Shadow has now been cleared by the reawakened Bohrok swarms.
