The Piraka are seven rogue Dark Hunters who arrived on Voya Nui to find an item of great power: the Kanohi Ignika, the Great Mask of Life. Upon their arrival on the island, the local Matoran hailed them as Toa coming to save them. They arrived in the Toa Mata's Canisters.

The Piraka each have two latent powers, one of which is related to their eyes. Each Piraka also has limited access to Elemental Powers which can only be used in tandem with a fellow Skakdi, except for the case of an Elemental weapon such as Thok's Ice Gun. The Piraka can't, however, use Kanohi. They lack the mental discipline to use mask powers.

Every Piraka also carried two weapons. With their right hand they carried special weapons, and on the other they carried a special launcher, which launches a sphere-like item called a Zamor Sphere, which they preferred to load with a mysterious virus, known as Antidermis.

"Piraka" is a Matoran word which means "thief and murderer," but even thieves and murderers would think twice about calling someone a 'Piraka'. It is very close to an obscenity in the Matoran language. Coincidentally, all the members of the Piraka are of the Skakdi species, who live on the now partially-destroyed island of Zakaz.

The Piraka are psychopathic characters who are regarded as highly ruthless and sadistic even by the standards of the Dark Hunters.

History

Shortly after the Makuta Teridax's defeat, the Piraka left the Dark Hunters after getting news of treasure near the Great Barrier. Finding Teridax's lair, they stumbled onto the Spear of Fusion. Hakann accidentally shot Vezok with it, and formed Vezon. At this time, they all suddenly gained the knowledge of a mask of life, the Ignika, that would be found on the island of Voya Nui. They were soon attacked by a Mana Ko, and fled. Vezon deserted the others and escaped before them using an Order of Mata Nui member's canister. On the island of Mata Nui, the remaining Piraka used the Toa Mata's Canisters to travel to Voya Nui.

Once arriving, they tricked the native Matoran (except Piruk, who was scared of Zaktan) into believing they were Toa and making them a stronghold. The masquerade soon ended, with the Piraka enslaving the Matoran to drain the Lava out of Mount Valmai. Vezok and Avak destroyed a cavern filled with records, while Thok and Reidak got into a fight with Axonn. Before Axonn finished the two Piraka, Brutaka arrived and smashed Axonn aside. The Toa Nuva then arrived, and the Piraka managed to defeat them. Zaktan then told the others to dump the Toa into the volcano. When it erupted, however, the five Piraka just left the Toa on the slope. Around this time, Zaktan bought the services of Brutaka with the Antidermis virus. Soon the Toa Nuva, along with the Matoran resistance, attacked the stronghold, but were swiftly defeated by Brutaka.

Soon after, Vezok met with the newly formed Toa Inika, and lost a fight with them. He fled, though the Inika didn't bother to track him down. The Piraka later got in another fight with the Inika, though neither side won. Thok and Hakann then stole the powers of Brutaka with a gold Zamor Sphere. The new Toa and the Piraka teamed up against the super-powerful Thok and Hakann, and the power was eventually returned to a weak Brutaka. The Piraka later traveled down to the tunnels leading to the Kanohi Ignika, leading to a race against time with the Inika. The Piraka encountered Irnakk, and Zaktan was sucked into his mind, later being released. The Piraka then proceeded deeper underground, eventually being trapped in six stone "cages," and Reidak betrayed them all, sending everyone plummeting into the water below; as the threat the Great Beings had placed there thousands of years ago had clearly warned. They fell into the water, and could find no way out for a short while, until flame erupted from the walls of the cavern, causing the water to heat up ... fast. They found a stone tunnel leading to the next section of the tests, never noticing the small changes the mutagen was making. They then set up base on the Lava Chamber Gate, hoping it would slow the Toa Inika down. It didn't much, and they proceeded to the Chamber of the Mask of Life. They met up with Vezon, who had the Mask of Life, and he fused Reidak and Vezok together to make a hulking combination of the two, who were eventually separated.

The Piraka, later awoke to find the Mask of Life, which was in Matoro's hands, fly up out of the chamber and into the Voya Nui waters, sinking into The Pit below. The Piraka decided not to attack the Inika, who were with the Toa Nuva and Axonn, but wait for a better time.

Due to exposure to the Pit Mutagen in submerged tunnels during their chase to retrieve the Ignika, the Piraka were gradually mutated into water-breathers and lost their bodies, retaining only their spines and heads. Apparently, the transformation occurred while they were still on land, forcing them to seek water before they suffocated. They traveled down The Cord following the Inika, where they encountered a tribe of Zyglak, but they promptly killed the creatures.

During the Toa Mahri's journey up the cord with the Matoran of Mahri Nui, the mutated Piraka ambushed the Toa, where they and the Toa were later knocked unconscious by a blast of Axonn's. The Piraka were later taken away by the Order of Mata Nui for interrogation and imprisoned in a water tank on Daxia, with the tyrant Karzahni residing in a neighboring tank and their former ally Vezon briefly occupying a cell nearby. Once everything that can be learned from the Piraka has been, they will remain imprisoned indefinitely on Daxia, as they cannot be released and have not yet committed acts worthy of banishment to The Pit.

Zaktan eventually made a deal with the Order; he would guide the Toa Hagah to Teridax in exchange for his freedom.

Set Information

The six current members of the Piraka were released as sets in early 2006. They featured a new "skull" piece with glow-in-the-dark painted teeth and a new orange eyepiece that lit up with a red LED when one pressed on the top of the head, symbolizing the vision powers of the Piraka. Each also featured a unique rubber piece designed to serve as both the spine and face. The tools of the Piraka were double-sided and could be switched from one function to another by pivoting the right hand of the Piraka. Every Piraka canister set contained a Zamor sphere launcher and four Zamor spheres.

Vezon was released in late 2006 in two separate sets, a titan set featuring Vezon atop Fenrakk and a titan combiner set featuring Vezon atop the Kardas Dragon.
