Created by the Great Beings, the Mysterious Sundial, or formerly the Onu-Koro Sundial, was the only feature of the mysterious impenetrable rock layer located at the bottom of Shaft B of the Great Mine. Around its circumference were astrological markings which a Prospector recognized as such and sketched onto a tablet.
When Takua visited Onu-Koro, the Prospector took the opportunity to ask him to deliver the letter to the Ga-Koro Astrologer for her opinion. She speculated that there might have been an earthquake, and it fell beneath the earth. She also noted that it had an indicator at four o'clock, a marking not shared by any other sundial. The Astrologer offered him a gnomon that she found in the foothills of Mount Ihu to see if it fit in the center of the sundial.
When he returned to the Great Mine, Takua used his Lightstone to fake sunlight and make the shadow of the Gnomon fall upon the four o'clock marker. This activated the sundial, whose markings lit up and disappeared, revealing a spiraling staircase to a chamber with a Golden Mask and the word Rahi floating above a pedestal. After the Battle for Kini-Nui, the Mask disappeared and the passageway was confirmed to be an entrance to Teridax's lair. At Turaga Whenua's suggestion, Takua traveled down the staircase and pressed a button on the pedestal which carried him into Mangaia to witness Teridax's defeat at the hands of the Toa Mata.
For an unknown reason, a mysterious voice told Toa Lewa Nuva to take this item and place it inside the Archives on Metru Nui, as part of the assignments to awaken Mata Nui.
Brutaka later used a shrink Kanoka to shrink the sundial, and gave it to Krakua, who in turn gave it to Takanuva before he began his journey to Karda Nui. He is meant to use it as a compass to locate the place Mata Nui is to be awakened: the Codrex. The sundial's current status is unknown.

- The markings around the Sundial are in the shape of pieces of the Makoki Stone. The significance of this is unknown.
- In the Mata Nui Online Game, the Onu-Matoran Prospector said that the layer of rock that covered the sundial had "higher organic levels than any mineral composite we've seen". This has been confirmed as non-canon.
