The Mana Ko are the ultimate guardians of Mangaia, Teridax's lair underneath the island of Mata Nui. Large and extremely fierce, Mana Ko have the power to shoot blasts of energy that disintegrate their target on impact, which they gladly do at anything that moves.
The Mana Ko never appeared during the Toa Mata's confrontations with Teridax in Mangaia. However, a few weeks after Takanuva defeated Teridax and the Matoran left Mata Nui to return Metru Nui, seven Skakdi - the six Piraka and the recently-created Vezon - were attacked by a Mana Ko after they stole the Spear of Fusion from Mangaia. It was during this battle that Vezon deserted his teammates, getting a head start to Voya Nui and taking (and getting cursed by) the Ignika Mask of Life. The Piraka's attempts to escape were blocked by the arrival of a second Mana Ko; the Piraka were able to escape, however, by tricking the Mana Ko into blasting an escape route into the wall, allowing them to step out onto the surface of Mata Nui - where, for some unknown reason, the Mana Ko would not follow.
Although regarded by Toa and Matoran to be evil creatures, the Mana Ko are actually servants and spies of the Order of Mata Nui. The Order allows the Mana Ko to serve the Brotherhood of Makuta as long as it suits the Order's purposes. Mana Ko do an excellent job of ensuring that none of the Brotherhood's weapons fall in the wrong hands. As a precaution against the Brotherhood turning the Mana Ko against the Order in their eventual destined battle, the Mana Ko have also been trained in shielding their minds just as actual members have been, protecting them from the Rahi control powers of the Makuta.
[carve] Set Information
The Mana Ko can be built out of the two Manas in the Manas set. Instructions to build it were included in the Manas set released in 2001. It used both Manas' motor bricks: one to drive or steer and one to jab with its claws. The motor bricks were operated simultaneously by one remote, however, by setting both motor bricks to receive the same frequency.
