The Krana are the "brains" of the Bohrok. They receive commands from the Bahrag and are capable of latching onto a being's face and controlling their mind, making them part of the swarm. They are also capable of slowing down their life processes. There are 48 varities of krana.
[carve] History
The original Krana were created by the Great Beings from the remains of the process which created the first Matoran that had been made. They exposed the remains to Energized Protodermis. The mixture turned into not only Krana, but also Zyglak.
The Bahrag were later taught how to create them on their own, though how is not exactly known. The Toa Metru did, however, discover an image of the Bahrag dipping some kind of object into a pool of Energized Protodermis and drawing out Krana. It is unknown what it is that they put into the pool to create the Krana.
There are eight types of Krana, belonging to the six different Bohrok types. Bohrok cannot function without a Krana, and if one is ever lost it is the task of the Bohrok Va to replace it.
After the Bahrag were defeated and imprisoned, the Matoran dumped the Krana into deep pits, sealed them, and marked them with warning signs.
[carve] Types
When the Bohrok first attacked Mata Nui, the Turaga instructed the Toa Mata to collect the eight varieties of Krana from each different type of Bohrok. These were later placed into niches on the floor of the Bohrok Nest, which opened up the pathways to the six Exo-Toa.
The eight types of Krana are listed below.
| Krana | Powers in Detail |
|---|---|
| Krana Xa | Swarm Commanders

| Krana Vu | Surveyors

| Krana Yo | Moles
Allowed its Bohrok to tunnel through almost any substance on Mata Nui. |
| Krana Su | Workers
Gave its Bohrok enhanced strength. |
| Krana Za | Squad Leaders
Allowed its Bohrok to communicate telepathically with others within the swarm. |
| Krana Ca | Clearance Workers

| Krana Bo | Sentinels

Krana have two different colors: "active" colors, and "dormant" colors. Krana are active if they are inside an operating Bohrok, or if they are attached to a being's face. When not commanding a host they go dormant, conserving energy and turning a different color. Bohrok Va do not need Krana to operate, so their Krana are always in the dormant state until used.

[carve] Set Information
Krana were first released in early 2002 in the Bohrok and Bohrok Va sets, with one random Krana appearing in each set in the color used by that particular Bohrok or Bohrok Va. The Krana were also available then in the "Krana" set (set #8569), a small boxed set that included three random Krana and two random Kanohi Aki or Rua in any of the shapes worn by the Toa Mata. While the back of the box showcased only the six active colored Krana, the box also could contain any of the six dormant colored Krana. During the later half of 2002 the "Kanohi Nuva and Krana" set became available, containing three random Krana in the same colors as before as well as two random Kanohi Nuva in any of the primary colors of the six Toa Mata.
Each Krana also bears three Matoran letters on their reverse sides.
