The Kanohi Kaukau is the Mask of Water Breathing. It allows its user to breathe water and water only for an extended (but limited) amount of time.

On Metru Nui, Kanohi Kaukau are made from Regeneration, Shrink, and Remove Poison Kanoka.

Gali, Kopaka, and Onua used their Kanohi Kaukau during their search for the Kanohi to collect an underwater mask in Tale of the Toa.

The Kanohi Kaukau was first released in the color translucent blue with the 2001 Gali set. It was also possible to receive a Kanohi Kaukau in a mask pack in 2001. Translucent green, red, orange, blue, white, black, light blue, and yellow were available in the mask pack.

In 2002, a Krana pack was released that contained three Krana and two Kanohi of either silver or gold color. The Kanohi Kaukau was one of six masks available as such.

Included in the Hahli set of 2003 was a translucent blue Kanohi Kaukau.

  • The Kanohi Kaukau was the only of the Toa Mata's Kanohi to have its design computer generated by set designers--the rest were done by carvings.
  • Before it was destroyed by the Bohrok, Naho Falls had a large Kanohi Kaukau statue.
  • The Kanohi Kaukau has nothing to do with the Kau Kau Staff.
