A Great Spirit is an extremely powerful being. The only known being stronger than a Great Spirit is a Great Being (in terms of power, not physical strength). A Great Spirit dying results in the death of the universe as well. The Great Spirit Mata Nui's job is to make sure the entire universe runs smoothly (e.g. - gravity works, sound works, etc.).
The only confirmed Great Spirit is Mata Nui. It is not possible to become a Great Spirit.
Trivia
- When a Great Spirit dies, the Spirit's universe that he is watching over only has three days before its destruction.
