The Great Rescue was a major event in which the Toa Metru brought the sleeping Matoran from Metru Nui to the island of Mata Nui above. It officially began with the Toa Metru's defeat of Teridax by encasing him a Toa Seal. The Toa Metru then brought six Matoran to the island above, although one of them, Ahkmou, was lost on the way. The Toa Metru, lead by Vakama, traveled back to Metru Nui to rescue the rest of the Matoran and Turaga Dume, although when they arrived, they were captured by the invading Visorak and mutated into Toa Hordika. Teamed up with the Rahaga, they also had to find the legendary Keetongu so they could heal themselves, and defeat Roodaka and Sidorak. The Great Rescue reached its climax with the Battle of Metru Nui, which resulted in the death of Sidorak and a temporary defeat of Roodaka. The Toa Hordika were turned back into Toa, and they loaded the sleeping Matoran onto airships which took them to the island above. However, Vakama first had to recover the Kanohi Vahi from the depths of the Silver Sea, which turned out to be a lot harder than it first sounded. However, in the end, all the Matoran, including Ahkmou, ended up safe on the shores of Mata Nui. The newly-made Turaga then had merely a year to prepare for what would become known as the Great War.
