The Great Beings are some of the most powerful beings in BIONICLE.

The Great Beings were the ones who created and sent Mata Nui down from 'paradise' to care for the Matoran. From clues revealed so far, there are at least three Great Beings. Apparently, the Great Beings actually carved the Kanohi Ignika and placed it on Voya Nui. The Great Beings are currently not in the Matoran universe. They did not, however, make the BIONICLE Planet and the Organic Rahi, just the Matoran Universe.
The Great Beings have a cameo appearance in a flashback in Inferno in which we saw the Great Beings placing the Ignika on Voya Nui.
When a Great Being touched the Ignika, even though he wasn't supposed to, it endowed him with the power to bring inanimate objects around him to life, and even developing their own needs and wants. Since they now had voices to express these needs, it got so out of hand that this poor particular Great Being was locked away from any inanimate objects so that no more could he bring things around him to life. This Great Being is rumored to have been driven mad after his imprisonment.
They also placed the Scroll of Preparations for Mata Nui's Awakening inside of the Great Temple.

There are currently three known Great Beings:
- A Great Being who touched (and was cursed by) the Ignika. He had been granted the powers of Life, which were too much for him. He was driven mad and had been sealed away from all inanimate objects.
- Two Great Beings created the staircase that leads to the Mask of Life chamber, as well as several traps along the way. They then placed the Ignika in the chamber and left.

[carve] Abilities and Traits
No one exactly knows what the Great Beings do, but the Matoran think that, as it is the Great Spirit's place to care for the universe, it is the Great Beings place to create universes. If a Great Being were to die while creating a universe, that universe wouldn't be destroyed. Instead, no more new life could form or all existing life would cease to exist with time. It would just be "unfinished".
Nothing is known about their physical appearance. It is known, however, that the Great Beings are weaker than a Great Spirit in terms of physical strength, and are capable of feeling pain, terror, awe, etc. They are said to have genders.

- The Great Beings are the only ones other than Gali who know something is in the Red Star, and the only ones who know what they are.
- One of the reasons the Great Beings created the universe was simply the urge to create.
