Crystal Serpents were made by Artakha. Legend has it that Artakha believed he could create creatures as easily as he did tools. His results were the four Crystal Serpents, enormous crystalline Rahi that absorb light and can amplify it to make a lethal heat ray. Realizing they could not be tamed but being unwilling to destroy them, Artakha set them free and they migrated to the North, South, East, and West sections of the island of Artakha. They are dormant most of the time, but they come out to feed once in about two centuries. Although not a Crystal Serpent's favorite meal when awake, Matoran know to stay clear of them. After this failure, Artakha never attempted to create Rahi again.
When the Makuta Kojol invaded the island of Artakha, two Crystal Serpents destroyed his first wave of Visorak by incinerating them.
