Type Book
Years released 2001-2010; 2014-2015

In Generation 1, the BIONICLE franchise related much of its storyline content through the use of Comics packaged with the LEGO Club Magazine. Smaller promotional comics have been released in other ways as well. The vast majority of BIONICLE comics were printed and distributed by the DC Comics company, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

BIONICLE: 2001 - 2005

Starting in June 2001, a three-issue BIONICLE miniseries was included in the LEGO Mania Magazine as a promotion for the sets, focusing on the Toa Mata's adventures on the island of Mata Nui.

The Bohrok Saga: 2002

With the success of the comic's original run, it was continued into 2002 with a six-part series featuring the Bohrok.

Metru Nui: 2004 - 2005

January 2004 marked the launch of the Metru Nui sub-series of comics which focused on the Toa Metru's adventures in Metru Nui.

City of Legends: 2004

BIONICLE Ignition: 2006 - 2008

If a Universe Ends, the first Ignition storyline comic

The Ignition series launched January 2006 with Comic 0, a special preview of the new series. Stuart Sayger illustrated the first eleven issues, and Leigh Gallagher assumed the role as in 2008. The comics featured the Toa Inika's journey on Voya Nui, the Toa Mahri's adventure in The Pit and The Final Battle in Karda Nui.

Sea of Darkness: 2007

The Sea of Darkness run takes place in and around Mahri Nui. The series tells the story for 2007.

Battle for Power: 2008

The Battle for Power series takes place in Karda Nui. The series tells the story for 2008 and is illustrated by Leigh Gallagher.

BIONICLE Glatorian: 2009 - 2010

Glatorian is the third comic series based on the BIONICLE legend. Greg Farshtey returns as writer, with series newcomer Pop Mhan as illustrator.

Journey's End: 2010

A two-issue series that covers the 2010 story. The series concludes Generation 1 and is illustrated by Pop Mhan.

Graphic Novels

Graphic Novels are extended comics bound in book form. In Generation 1, the Graphic Novels were generally anthologies of the BIONICLE comic from DC, occasionally modified in order to fit into the book size. Generation 2 sports Graphic Novels with entirely exclusive content.

Although the Papercutz novels are largely reprints of the DC comic, they do contain several unique stories.

Promotional Comics

Challenge of the Rahi

Smaller promotional comics have been created to fill out the BIONICLE line.

McDonald's Comics

The first of these comics was Challenge of the Rahi, a free mini-comic available at McDonald's restaurants participating in the 2001 BIONICLE Happy Meal promotion. Following this, the 2002 The Bohrok Awake promotion had three mini comics randomly inserted in card packs to spread the story of the Bohrok.

Lunchables Comics

Lunchables also had a set of promotional comics. They were slightly shorter than the McDonald's Promo Comics and took place during the events of issue 17 of the main comic. Like issue 17, the stories are taken from Trial By Fire.

Set Pack-in Comics

2015 Promotional Comics

In Generation 2, sets above the $9.99 US price point get individual mini comics, available on their packaging, in their instruction manuals, and on their character page on The exception to the rule is the Lord of Skull Spiders, whose comic is absent from his character page. The comics for the Masters show the Toa collecting their respective Golden Masks of Power, and then combining with their Protector for a powered-up mode. The Skull Army comics show their subjects stealing a mask from a Toa, draining its energy, and moving in for attack. The Mask Maker vs Skull Grinder comic depicts Ekimu saving the Mask of Creation from Kulta.
