There are many Characters in the BIONICLE storyline. Below are a list of those characters who have a considerable amount of significance in the storyline.

• Great Beings - The most powerful beings known, the Great Beings create universes.
• Great Spirit
  • Mata Nui - Mata Nui is a Great Spirit who balances the BIONICLE universe. He is revered by Matoran, but the Brotherhood of Makuta cast him into an endless sleep where he slowly lost his grip on life, and perished. Currently, he is revived and now awake.

Toa are the guardians of the islands they inhabit. There are many teams of Toa, who each have their own destiny.

• Toa Mata - A group of Toa made to awaken Mata Nui and defeat Teridax. They later transformed into the Toa Nuva.
• Toa Nuva - Powerful Toa transformed from Toa Mata by Energized Protodermis after defeating the Bahrag. They received stronger elemental powers and Kanohi Nuva.
• Toa Metru - Six Matoran who received Toa Stones from Toa Lhikan and were transformed into Toa.
• Toa Hordika - The Toa Metru transformed by Hordika Venom into half-Rahi, half-Toa beasts.
• Toa Hagah - A group of Toa who were assigned to guard Teridax.
• Toa Inika - Six Matoran from Metru Nui who were transformed into Toa by lightning that descended from the Red Star.
• Toa Mahri - The Toa Inika transformed by the energies of the Mask of Life.
• Toa Mangai - Lhikan's Toa Team, the first Toa Team to defend Metru Nui.
• Takanuva - Toa of Light. He was originally Takua, but was transformed into Takanuva by the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light.
• Helryx - Toa of Water, the first Toa, and leader of the Order of Mata Nui.
• Jovan - Toa of Magnetism, from the first Toa team that used the Ignika to revive Mata Nui. Turned into a Turaga and died when Voya Nui split from the Southern Continent.
• Lesovikk - Toa of Air, last survivor of the first Toa Team.
• Krakua - Toa of Sonics who works for the Order of Mata Nui and appeared to Vakama in a vision
• Nikila - Toa of Lightning, the tactician of Lesovikk's team, killed by Zyglak.
• Other Toa - Other Toa that exist or have existed in the BIONICLE Universe.

[carve] Matoran

Matoran are the inhabitants of Metru Nui, Voya Nui, Karda Nui, Artakha, Stelt, Nynrah, Xia, and Tren Krom Peninsula. There were many Matoran on Metru Nui before the Great Cataclysm, and very few Matoran have been lost since.

• Chronicler's Company - A group of Matoran who helped Takua defend Kini-Nui against Teridax's Rahi.
• Voya Nui Resistance Team - A small group made to defeat the Piraka.
• Nynrah Ghosts - A group of expert crafters on the islands of Nynrah and Xia.

[carve] Turaga

Turaga are the final form of a Matoran's life (Matoran-Toa-Turaga). After achieving their destiny, and sacrificing all of their power, a Toa will become a Turaga. They are leaders of the Matoran. They can use Kanohi masks and elemental powers, but not to the extent of a Toa.

• Vakama - Former Turaga of Ta-Koro, currently Turaga of Metru Nui.
• Matau - Former Turaga of Le-Koro, currently Turaga of Metru Nui.
• Nuju - Former Turaga of Ko-Koro, currently Turaga of Metru Nui.
• Nokama - Former Turaga of Ga-Koro, currently Turaga of Metru Nui.
• Whenua - Former Turaga of Onu-Koro, currently Turaga of Metru Nui.
• Onewa - Former Turaga of Po-Koro, currently Turaga of Metru Nui.
• Dume - Turaga of Metru Nui
• Lhikan - Turaga of Metru Nui; deceased
• Jovan - Turaga of Voya Nui; deceased

Order of Mata Nui is a secretive organization that serves the will of Mata Nui.

[carve] Members

• Helryx - Toa of Water, the first Toa, and leader of the Order of Mata Nui.
• Axonn - A member of the Order of Mata Nui who wields a giant axe and wears a Kanohi Rode, the Great Mask of Truth.
• Brutaka - A probationary member of Order of Mata Nui who holds a twin-bladed sword, and wears a damaged Kanohi Olmak, the Great Mask of Dimensional Gates.
• Botar - A deceased member of the Order of Mata Nui who sent the irredeemable to the Pit.
• Hydraxon - A former member who guarded the Pit. Hydraxon is technically dead, and his reincarnation is not considered a true member by the Order.
• Jerbraz - An invisible member of the Order of Mata Nui who hired Mazeka to work for the Order and gathered information for the Atlas.
• Tobduk - A senior member of the Order of Mata Nui who planned the deaths of or personally slayed everyone who knew the location of Artakha and gathered information for the Atlas.
• Johmak - A member of the Order of Mata Nui who gathered information for the Atlas.
• Trinuma - A nine foot tall warrior. Known, so far, for initiating the use of the Staff of Artakha, distributing arms to Brutaka's team, and accompanying Vezon on a journey to Destral.
• Ancient - A deceased Dark Hunter who acted as a spy for the Order of Mata Nui.
• Mazeka - A heroic Ko-Matoran from the Tren Krom Peninsula.

• Umbra - A servant of the Order of Mata Nui who guards the Mask of Life and has powers of Light.
• Krakua - Toa of Sonics who works for the Order of Mata Nui and appeared to Vakama in a vision.

[carve] Others

• Pewku - An Ussal Crab that helped Takua and Jaller on their quest to find the Seventh Toa.
• Exo-Toa - Powerful suits of armor created by the Matoran slaves of the Brotherhood of Makuta. The Toa Mata once used them to fight against the Bahrag and the Bohrok-Kal.
• Rahaga - The former Toa Hagah who were defeated and mutated by Roodaka. They helped the Toa Hordika search for Keetongu and to defeat the Visorak. They have recently been turned back into the Toa Hagah they once were.
• Keetongu - A legendary Rahi who follows the Three Virtues of Mata Nui and can counteract the effects of Hordika Venom. He changed the Toa Hordika back to Toa Metru after the Battle of Metru Nui.
• Krahka - A female shape-shifting Rahi and the last of her species. She originally opposed the Toa Metru, but eventually fought alongside them against the Visorak.
• Artakha - The ruler of an island named Artakha, the legendary Matoran refuge.

• Karzahni - The ruler of Karzahni.

• Vezon - An insane former Piraka member. He was briefly fused to Fenrakk by Ignika, the Mask of Life, and then captured by Zyglak.
  • Fenrakk - A strange, four-legged creature, the steed and pet of Vezon.
  • Kardas Dragon - The transformed form of Fenrakk.
• Barraki - Six warlords who attempted to take control of Mahri Nui and use the Mask of Life to be free of their mutations.

[carve] Brotherhood of Makuta

The Brotherhood of Makuta is a group of Makuta who are on the same power level as Teridax. It was created to serve Mata Nui's will, but after some time, they turned evil and put him into an endless slumber.

[carve] Members

• Teridax - The Makuta of Metru Nui and current leader of the Brotherhood of Makuta, the epitome of evil.
• Miserix - Former leader of the Brotherhood, presumed deceased by Teridax, recently freed from captivity by the Order of Mata Nui.
• Antroz - The leader of the Makuta forces invading Karda Nui.
• Vamprah - The hunter of Antroz's team.
• Chirox - A member of Antroz's team who specializes in the creation and mutation of Rahi.
• Icarax - The Makuta of Karzahni, an excellent warrior, currently in possession of the Kanohi Kraahkan.
• Mutran - The slightly mad Makuta of the center of the Southern Continent, a top Makuta scientist, creator of the Shadow Leeches, now deceased.
• Gorast - The brutal female Makuta of the Tren Krom Peninsula, conqueror of the Visorak.
• Krika - The Makuta of the northern part of the Northern Continent (and since Spiriah's defection, Zakaz) and a member of Antroz's team that does not agree with Teridax's Plan, but follows it anyway.
• Bitil - The Makuta of the Southern Islands and a member of Antroz's team who wants to achieve a higher position in the Brotherhood.
• Spiriah - The deceased Makuta of Zakaz, who went into hiding after failed experimentation on the Skakdi, the natives of the island.
• Kojol - The Makuta of Artakha, killed by the Order of Mata Nui.
• Tridax - A deceased Makuta who was given control of Destral during the Makuta attack in Karda Nui.

[carve] Servants and Army

• Sidorak - A deceased servant of the Brotherhood of Makuta, the selfish leader of the Visorak Horde, killed by Roodaka.
• Roodaka - A double agent of the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Dark Hunters and the former viceroy of the Visorak Horde.
• Rahkshi - A mechanical suit of armor for Kraata, made by putting a separate Kraata into a pool of Energized Protodermis, where it transforms into the inorganic suit.
• Visorak - The Visorak are fearsome spider-like creatures, the army of the Brotherhood of Makuta. They were led by Sidorak and once took over Metru Nui but were later freed by Vakama. They have since been reformed as a Brotherhood army.
• Morbuzakh - A plant created by Teridax during his attempted takeover of the city of Metru Nui.
• Vican - The first Shadow Matoran and Mutran's lab assistant.
• Vultraz - A Shadow Matoran from the Tren Krom Peninsula who discovered the entryway to Karda Nui.

[carve] Dark Hunters

The Dark Hunters is an organization of mercenaries and bounty hunters. They'll do anything for the right price, even if it means risking their own life.

• The Shadowed One - The leader of the Dark Hunters. Sentrakh is his bodyguard.
• Ancient - A deceased Dark Hunter spy working for the Order of Mata Nui.
• Nidhiki - A former Toa mutated into an insectiod Dark Hunter.
• Krekka - The partner of Nidhiki. What he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for in strength.
• Lariska - A female Dark Hunter who convinced Nidhiki to turn against his fellow Toa and Lhikan.
• Sentrakh - The Shadowed One's chief bodyguard. He is neither living nor dead.
• Piraka - A group of rogue Skakdi Dark Hunters.

• Karzahni - An intelligent plant made by Teridax that was later abandoned in favor of the Morbuzakh.
• Nocturn - A Pit prisoner who serves the Barraki.
• Nektann (Being) - A prime Skakdi warlord.
• Nektann (Robot) - Attack and defense machines used by Skakdi.

[carve] Bohrok

Bohrok are millions of mechanical creatures beneath the surface of Mata Nui, which also exist below Metru Nui.

• Bahrag - The Bahrag, Cahdok and Gahdok, are the queens of the Bohrok swarms. They have now been set free to continue their job. They have the powers of all six Bohrok.
• Bohrok - Mechanical swarms that bear the six main elemental powers (with one exception). They are driven by creatures called Krana, which are controlled by the Bahrag, the queens of the swarms.
• Bohrok Va - Scouts and couriers for the Bohrok.
• Bohrok-Kal - An elite team of Bohrok made to awaken the Bahrag Queens.

• Vahki - The Law-Enforcement on Metru Nui.
• Kralhi - Prototype Vahki.
• Kranua - Specialized enforcers on Metru Nui.
• Kraahu - Specialized enforcers on Metru Nui.

[carve] Others

• Tren Krom - An ancient being who was in existence when the Great Beings brought the universe into being, holding the knowledge of how the universe works as well as why it works.
• Steltian Trader - A trader of Sidorak's species who lives on Stelt. He was accosted by Brutaka's team and attacked by Makuta Miserix.

• Wairuha - The Toa Kaita created by the merging of Gali, Kopaka, and Lewa.
• Wairuha Nuva - The Toa Nuva Kaita created by the merging of Gali Nuva, Kopaka Nuva, and Lewa Nuva.
• Akamai - The Toa Kaita created by the merging of Tahu, Pohatu, and Onua.
• Akamai Nuva - The Toa Nuva Kaita created by the merging of Tahu Nuva, Pohatu Nuva, and Onua Nuva.
• Turaga Nui - A being created by the merging of six Turaga.
• Matoran Kaita - A being created by the merging of three Matoran.
• Matoran Nui - A being created by the merging of six Matoran.

[carve] Dark Kaita/Fusions

• Rahkshi Kaita Za - A Rahkshi Kaita made by the merging of a Turahk, a Kurahk, and a Lerahk.
• Rahkshi Kaita Vo - A Rahkshi Kaita made by the merging of a Guurahk, a Panrahk, and a Vorahk.
• Prototype - A Dark Hunter created by fusion of a Toa of Fire and a Toa of Earth by the power of the Spear of Fusion.
• Piraka Fusion - A fusion of Vezok and Reidak created by the the Spear of Fusion.

[carve] Neutral Kaita

• Bohrok Kaita Ja - A Bohrok Kaita made by the merging of a Gahlok, a Kohrak, and a Lehvak.
• Bohrok Kaita Za - A Bohrok Kaita made by the merging of a Tahnok, a Pahrak, and a Nuhvok.
• Bohrok-Kal Kaita Ja - The Bohrok-Kal Kaita created by Gahlok-Kal, Kohrak-Kal, and Lehvak-Kal
• Bohrok-Kal Kaita Za - The Bohrok-Kal Kaita that could have been created by Tahnok-Kal, Pahrak-Kal, and Nuhvok-Kal
• Takutanuva - This being was a fusion of Takanuva and Teridax. As such it was both light and dark.

[carve] Mythological Figures

• Irnakk - A mythical creature created by the Skakdi rulers of Zakaz to fill their subjects with terror and keep them in line.
• Lhii - A mythical Matoran revered for his lava-surfing talent. He actually represents Toa Lhikan, who died at the hands of Teridax.
