The Bohrok-Kal were elite Bohrok that were controlled by advanced Krana, called Krana-Kal. They attempted to steal the Nuva Symbols to awaken the Bahrag, but were later defeated by the power of the very symbols that they tried to pilfer.
Only six are known to have existed:
- Tahnok-Kal, Bohrok-Kal of Electricity
- Gahlok-Kal, Bohrok-Kal of Magnetism
- Lehvak-Kal, Bohrok-Kal of Vacuum
- Pahrak-Kal, Bohrok-Kal of Plasma
- Kohrak-Kal, Bohrok-Kal of Sonics
- Nuhvok-Kal, Bohrok-Kal of Gravity
The reason the Bahrag created only six Bohrok-Kal was that in case of a revolt, they would not be overthrown.
[carve] History
The Kal were created in part, for their very mission of freeing the Bohrok Queens, the Bahrag. The Kal were created when they were bathed in an unknown substance, the same substance that Teridax used to transform a Kraata into Kraata-Kal. The Bahrag could have possibly learned how to distill energy from a mutagen like Hordika Venom, and used that energy to mutate the Bohrok and their Krana. What came out were the Bohrok-Kal. These new types could talk to other species, and even speak Matoran. Another big difference between the Kal and their fellow cousins was the fact that they were not linked to the Bahrag, thus giving them their sole purpose of awakening the queens if they fell. Yet another difference is that these machines had personality.
[carve] Awakening
After the Toa Mata used their Elemental Powers to seal away the Bahrag and were subsequently transformed into Toa Nuva via Energized Protodermis, the Bahrag sent a psychic signal for the Bohrok-Kal to steal the Nuva Symbols from each village, bring them to the cave, and place them onto the Nuva Cube, where their power could be utilized to free the Bahrag from their prison and spread havoc once again. The Kal completed the first step of their task with success, and the Toa Nuva were left powerless.
[carve] Battles with the Toa Nuva
The Bohrok-Kal battled the Toa Nuva several times throughout their journey to the caves. Every time, the Toa Nuva were defeated. Even when three Toa Nuva transformed into a Toa Nuva Kaita, Wairuha Nuva, three Bohrok-Kal formed a Bohrok-Kal Kaita, Bohrok-Kal Kaita Ja, and quickly defeated him. Soon, however, both parties reached the caves, where the final showdown would take place.
[carve] The Final Battle
The Toa Nuva followed the trails of the Bohrok-Kal until they got to a cave that was made by Pahrak-Kal. It led into a deeper cave where the Toa Nuva found another hole which led to the Bahrag's lair. Feeling that the edges of the hole where still hot, they were careful and sent Lewa Nuva down it to check if the coast was clear. Lewa saw that the Exo-Toa were battling the Bohrok-Kal on their own. Lewa went back to warn the others and they all jumped into the Bahrags' lair. There they saw Exo-Toa parts scattered around. The Exo-Toa had lost and the Bohrok-Kal were placing the symbols on the cube! They had already touched the Protodermis cage with their Krana. Tahu Nuva had one final, desperate plan: before he left to join the others to recover the symbols, Turaga Vakama had given him a mask he created back at Metru Nui: the Kanohi Vahi, the legendary mask of Time. Tahu planned to use this to slow down time long enough to stop the Kal. This didn't work, but it gave Gali Nuva time to think of a new idea which did: the Toa Nuva channeled all their Elemental Energies into the symbols, hoping that the Kal would overpower and destroy themselves. It worked, and the Bohrok Kal were consumed by their own power, leaving the Bahrag imprisoned and helpless.
[carve] Set Information
The Bohrok-Kal were released in early 2003 as canister sets, with each containing 40 pieces. They were the Bohrok sets with silver pieces and a new head plate with a design in their respective element colors. When a lever on the back of the Bohrok-Kal was pressed, its head would shoot forward, and snap back when the lever was released. They were also each released with a random, rubbery Krana-Kal.
