Blade Burrowers are powerful and mysterious Rahi that have known to be a menace to Matoran.

The Blade Burrowers were created by Makuta Mutran for use by Barraki Kalmah during his reign with the League of Six Kingdoms. They were later tampered with by some unknown entity.

Using their powerful claws, they dig tunnels endlessly. In the Onu-Metru Archives, Archivists occasionally mistake these passageways to be be parts of the Archives, wander down them, and never be seen again. Blade Burrowers have very poor eyesight, so they must hunt by smell. When food in the Archives begins to run low, they often venture to the surface and cause massive destruction. When the Vahki were active, they often had difficulty containing a Blade Burrower because of its long tail that can be used as a club.

Both Kalmah and Bomonga have attempted to chart the Blade Burrower tunnels, but it was Mutran who realized that the tunnels formed a map of some kind. Researching further, he also discovered that the Blade Burrowers do not know why they are digging the tunnels, but rather that they simply must. Whoever compelled the Burrowers to create these maps also brought in bulls to guard their work in Metru Nui; either Artakha Bulls or a mutant Kane-Ra.

• The Blade Burrower was an entry sent in to LEGO as part of the LEGO Magazine Rahi-building Contest. It was created by Daniel Settle and given a name and story role by Greg Farshtey in the book BIONICLE: Rahi Beasts.
• The map that the Blade Burrowers make is actually the symbol that represents the Three Virtues.
  • The Matoran Universe is part of the map, but the map extends far beyond its borders.
