Prisoners of The Pit is the seventh book in the BIONICLE Legends series. This book came out in the summer of 2007 and mainly follows the newly transformed Toa Mahri as they struggle to find a way to retrieve the Ignika from the Barraki.

Synopsis

Makuta Teridax's Antidermis essence floated down through The Cord to The Pit. He planned to act on his own, as the Rahi, Bohrok, and Piraka had failed to defeat the Toa. Elsewhere in the Cord, the Toa Inika were battling a tribe of Zyglak when the tunnel walls began to crack and water flooded in. They decided to take their chances in the open ocean. There they found the Venom Eel that had caused the damage, drawn by the prospect of a meal. Attracted to the light of Jaller's swords, the eel started towards the Toa. At that moment, however, the Mask of Life let out a flash of light and energy in response to Pridak's grabbing it from the hands of Dekar. It transformed the Inika into the Toa Mahri, who were left unconscious after the energy surge.

The Barraki were surprised that they had survived the blast. Kalmah found Pridak clutching the Ignika in a state of insanity, with a large crack running down the mask, while Takadox noticed the unconscious Toa Mahri and waited to see if the venom eel would eat them. Dekar, meanwhile, was running out of air and nearly died before the Ignika saved him by transforming him into the long-dead jailer of the Pit, Hydraxon.

When the Toa Mahri recovered, they were forced to fight the giant venom eel. They soon discovered that their masks had changed powers, and that their lightning abilities were lost. Despite this, they managed to defeat the eel. Seeing Mahri Nui in the distance, the Toa made their way tothe sunken city. Unfortunately, the Matoran there believed that the Toa were escaped prisoners of the Pit. Defilak, the current Matoran leader, did allow Matoro to enter the city, but it soon became apparent that the Toa's transformation rendered them unable to breathe air. Keeping Matoro in the city, Defilak told the five other Mahri to prove they were Toa, as they had claimed, they had to free the Air Fields from Carapar's invading Keras crabs. When they arrived, though, the crabs drew aside without a fight. The five Toa then encountered the Barraki, who took them prisoner.

Defilak observed all of this, and believed that the Toa and Barraki were allies. Seeing that he could not convince the Matoran, Matoro fled from the city, but was captured by Hydraxon. Hydraxon placed Matoro in a cell in the Pit, and introduced him to Maxilos, a robotic guard, and Spinax, an Energy Hound. Teridax had taken over the body of the Maxilos robot, however, and revealed this to Matoro, claiming to be on his side.

During this time, the Barraki had decided to wait until the Mask of Life was destroyed by the Pit Mutagen and then use the leaking energy to restore themselves to their pre-mutation forms. They gave the mask to another prisoner, Nocturn, for safekeeping. While this was going on, the Toa Mahri were able to escape from their cells using their mask powers. After breaking out, a Hahnah Crab began following Jaller. During a fight with Kalmah and Carapar, Kongu unintentionally unleashed a gigantic ancient sea Rahi with his Kanohi Zatth. The Rahi easily defeated the two Barraki and left the area.

Elsewhere, Nuparu found several Cordak Blasters in a cave and showed them to the others. Each Toa took one, save Kongu, who took two. They then returned to Mahri Nui and Hahli managed gained the Matoran's trust to some extent. Matoro joined up with them, pretending that Maxilos was their ally. He did not mention anything about Teridax possessing the robot, as the Makuta did not want the other Toa to know. Maxilos then suggested that the Toa split up to search for the mask.

Whil this was happening, Nocturn discovered that while he held the Mask of Life, everything he touched died. He put the mask down for a moment, and a Gadunka jumped under it for shelter. It slowly began to enlarge, but Nocturn had already walked off with the mask looking for Ehlek, to tell him about his newfound power.

On his way to the Sea Squid cave, Carapar noticed that the revived Venom Eel was fighting with the monster Kongu had awakened, but continued on. After they arrived, the Barraki decided that the Toa must have stolen the Mask of Life when they escaped, and they split up to catch them and retrieve the mask.

In one part of the Pit, Mantax attacked Hahli, only to find out that the Toa Mahri had no idea where the mask was. Elsewhere, Jaller and Kongu stumbled upon several hatching squid eggs, but ended up making a deal with Kalmah and Carapar to avoid being killed by the newborn squids. The Toa would obtain the Mask of Life, and in turn would restore the Barraki to their past forms. In addition, the Toa would have to kill Pridak. Meanwhile, Nuparu and Hewkii were attacked by Ehlek and trapped in a venom eel nest. They escaped by using their Cordak blasters. Nuparu saw several of Pridak's Takea sharks and increased their weight using his Kanohi Garai until they slammed into Ehlek's eels. While this was going on, Matoro and Maxilos encountered Pridak and Takadox. Pridak's army of Takea attacked them, but Matoro used his mask to reanimate the skeletons of dead sea creatures. In addition, Ehlek and his forces attacked Pridak and his forces. Ehlek mistook the Takea whose gravity had increased as an attack commanded by Pridak. Matoro and Maxilos took advantage of the distraction to slip away.

Several hours later, the Toa Mahri returned to Mahri Nui. Defilak was upset at what the Toa had done. In addition to the deaths of several Hydruka and Matoran, the safe hour that the residents of Mahri Nui had was no more. Then the Toa realized that Hahli was absent. As the Toa wondered the whereabouts of their fellow Toa, a Ga-Matoran reported that Hahli was seen leading a group of Mantax's manta rays. Meanwhile, Nocturn ran into Hydraxon and was defeated by him. Hydraxon saw the Mask of Life, and the part of his conciousness that was Dekar made him realize that the mask was dangerous. The jailer took aim with his Cordak blaster and fired at the mask.

As Matoro and Maxilos headed to the last place where Hahli was spotted, Maxilos revealed that in order to revive Mata Nui, the Cord must be severed. This would result in the sinking of Voya Nui and the destruction of Mahri Nui.

Elsewhere, on Metru Nui, the Toa Nuva snuck into the Great Temple for a message that Axonn had told them about. They found the message, which was written on paper. It was a list of things needed to be done before Mata Nui could be awakened. The first thing was for the Bohrok to complete their mission. Thus, the Toa Nuva traveled up to Mata Nui and freed the Bahrag queens. As soon as they did so, the Bohrok woke up, ready to cleanse the island of Mata Nui.
