"Nuju said they sent the Toa to Voya Nui in canisters, like the ones they used to come to Mata Nui. He said there was no other safe way for them to make the journey. He said...he said the way to Voya Nui passes through a land of the dead."

The book begins with Turaga Dume explaining how Mata Nui is not merely sleeping, but will die shortly. He accuses one of the other six Turaga of telling the Matoran this, as well as that the Toa Nuva have not returned from their secret mission to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika, Mask of Life, which they had agreed not to. Indeed, Turaga Nokama had told Jaller, Matoro, Nuparu, Kongu, Hewkii, and Hahli this, who then vanished from their homes in the night, last being seen in Le-Metru near the abandoned Underwater Chutes, which lead to Voya Nui, there. Dume and the other Turaga agree to send Toa Takanuva to retrieve the six Matoran, but he has gone missing as well.

The group emerges from the underwater Chutes onto a long and narrow land bridge where Takanuva attempts to persuade Jaller to go back to Metru Nui, where it's safe, and let him find the Toa Nuva and Mask of Life. Takanuva fails in convincing Jaller and enters a tunnel up ahead to scout, using his Elemental Power of Light to surround himself in an aura of light so as to see better. Leaving the Matoran outside, he enters, but his aura vanishes when he enters the tunnel. Takanuva attempts to remake it, but fails, discovering all of his powers are gone. With the tunnel being so dark he becomes disoriented and unable to escape. The group of Matoran, becoming impatient for Takanuva to return, decide to go in after him. Jaller prepares to enter the tunnel with Kongu and Hewkii, telling Hahli, Matoro, and Nuparu to wait thirty seconds after his group enters the tunnel to follow. Their Lightstones lit, Jaller's group enters the tunnel. Hahli notices that Jaller's group's Lightstones could no longer be seen, prompting her to hold her Lightstone into the tunnel. When she does this, her Lightstone too, is extinguished. Pulling it back, she sees that it is now, again, alight. Nuparu offers her a length of cable, telling her to tie it around her waist, so that the three Matoran would be linked together, as well as to keep talking once they enter the tunnel, so that they can follow each other by their voices. Right as the group is about to enter the tunnel, Matoro stops them, telling them that Turaga Nuju had said that the way to Voya Nui was "through a land of the dead." Hahli, not believing this, reassures Matoro and the group enters the tunnel. After the group enters, Matoro doesn't hear Hahli talking, as she had been told to. Finding this unnerving, he shouts for her to speak up, however, he cannot hear himself either. Matoro, stumbling around in the darkness, feels someone grab his hand, and helps the figure to his feet. Feeling a tug on the cable around his waist, guiding him, he followed it out of the tunnel, into the light, where Takanuva and the other five Matoran were waiting. Realizing he didn't know who's hand he was holding, quickly turned to look, but the hand that had been in his was gone.

Jaller and co. find themselves on a long, narrow, strip of land, surrounded by a sea, with a natural stone archway far off. Jaller offers anyone who wishes, the opportunity to turn back. Everyone declines and the group moves forward, Hahli discussing her worries about the future with Takanuva as well as his battle with Teridax and wondering if Teridax let himself be defeated, as part of a bigger plan. Before long, their conversation was interrupted by Hewkii shouting up ahead, and attempting to pry something out of the ground. Succeeding, he uncovers a grimy Kanohi mask, and replaces his powerless Kanohi Kakama with the new mask, only to quickly remove it, claiming it to be a Great mask. Takanuva takes the mask and inspects it. Questioning what it does, he replaces his Kanohi Avohkii with it, soon discovering that it is a mask of telepathy by accidentally reading Hahli's thoughts.

The group makes camp about three-fourths of the way to the archway, Jaller standing guard while Hahli, Hewkii, Nuparu, and Kongu slept. Matoro, still awake, joins Jaller, and Jaller questions him about how shaken up he was after exiting the tunnel. The conversation is soon interrupted by Takanuva running toward the two, claiming he had seen an unknown Matoran in the archway while he was out walking. The other Matoran awoke while Takanuva continued that the Matoran had run before he could say anything. The group goes the arch to investigate, and Takanuva attempts to pass through, but he is hurled backwards into the Matoran. Angry and confused, he fires two beams of light at the unseen obstacle, only to have them deflected. Nuparu then approaches the arch and easily passes through it. Takanuva again tries and fails to pass, though the other five Matoran have no problem doing so. Jaller attempts to go back to Takanuva, but he is unable to. Hahli then produces a stone tablet which she had found earlier, deciphering a warning from it: "This is a realm of shadow ... of famine and plague and blight ... This is a world of darkness ... and there is no place for light." Takanuva instructs the six Matoran to stay where they are and that he will find someway to get through the barrier. However, Jaller is not convinced and tells Takanuva to go back to Metru Nui and inform the Turaga there of what has happened and not to send any help. Takanuva and the six Matoran say goodbye to each other, and Takanuva tells Jaller he would make a great Toa and not to die.

The group of Matoran encounter a mountain and begin climbing it, hearing scuttling sounds while doing so. Matoro suggests that maybe they should go back down and find another way, but Hewkii confirms there to be no other way, Kongu and he having already looked for one. The group continues for some time until they discover a Matoran with a Kanohi Rau-shaped mask on the rocks above, looking down on them. Hahli attempts to get the unknown Matoran to come down from the perch, unsuccessful, the six Matoran climb up. The scuttling noises return when the group nears the unknown Matoran, and eight Manas emerge from the rocks to surround the unknown Matoran. The unknown Matoran indicates for the group to follow and begins up the slope, the Manas following behind. The six Matoran are lead to a bowl-shaped canyon with many Matoran in need of repair there. As the group of seven Matoran and eight Manas pass through the canyon, the Matoran in need of repair begin following them.

The six newcomers are disturbed by volcanoes that spew hot ice, waterfalls of dust, thunderless lightning, thunder-producing water, and a large metal structure, charred and twisted, fires burning inside. Attempting to leave, the six are blocked by the eight Manas from before as well more around the edge of the canyon, leaving the only way for them to go being forward. They travel on, passing through a garden sanctuary-like area filled with stone statues of Matoran and ground that screams as they tread on it.

Eventually they encounter a large, ebon and gold armored being, studded with blades, batted and twisted, wearing a patchwork-like Kanohi, looking as though it had been comprised of four separate masks. His gauntlets crackled with energy and he held a length of fiery chain in one hand. Introducing himself as Karzahni, he tells the six Matoran how this land, his home, will be their home as well. Hahli whispers to the others that one of Turaga Vakama's tales had mentioned a dark place where Matoran who worked poorly were sent, never to return. Karzahni, speaking again, tells the group that, around 100,000 years ago, many Matoran had come here, some being damaged, and some just being lazy. Hahli remarks that the Matoran here don't seem to be enjoying themselves. Karzahni counters that they prefer it over the alternative, and that they will as well. Jaller declares it to be monstrous, saying that Mata Nui wouldn't allow such a place to exist, and that even Teridax wouldn't, but stops his rant when he sees Karzahni looking confused. Karzahni questions who Mata Nui and Teridax are and what influence they would have here. The broken Matoran surround the group of six, stripping them of their tools, supplies, and the Kanohi Suletu that they had found earlier, which Kongu wore then. Karzahni then reaches out, demanding their masks, but Jaller refuses, only recently having found out that his Kanohi Hau had once belonged to Toa Lhikan, a hero of Metru Nui who had died to protect the Matoran there from Teridax. Karzahni responds activating his Olisi, showing Jaller a vision of the day that the Rahkshi Turahk had killed him, except in the vision Takua dies instead.

Karzahni then forces Hahli to reveal all of her knowledge of the last 100,000 years to him, since she was the chronicler of the group, While the rest of the group worked in Karzahni's furnace. In Karzahni's realm, Jaller and co. find one of the Matoran who built the Toa Canisters, who was insane and has been hiding from Karzahni for centuries. He mentions a world that feeds the world during his mad ramblings. He had another set of six Toa Canisters hidden nearby and he led Jaller and co. to them. Karzahni then gives the seven Matoran a vision of the death of Mata Nui with his Olisi, making the tyrant hesitate and the Builder rejoice with hope. Jaller's group used this moment to climb into the Canisters, despite the risk of death, and escape to Voya Nui.

Meanwhile on Voya Nui, Zaktan hires Brutaka, and offers the Zamor Spheres in return for his service. Hakann follows Brutaka, but Brutaka catches him, threatening to kill Hakann unless he tells why is following him. Brutaka then says that he will serve whoever controls the Zamor Spheres, so he and other Piraka go to the stronghold to confront Zaktan. Avak puts a prison around Zaktan, preventing Zaktan from splitting up. Then he, Hakann, and Thok begin talking about being leaders. Outside, the Toa Nuva and Matoran are hiding, and can't get the secret entrance to the stronghold open. Lewa Nuva spots Reidak, and jumps out, and insults Reidak until he accidentally breaks the door open. The Toa Nuva and Matoran pursue him in, until Reidak disappears inside, and the Nuva suspect a trap, so they dig under. Inside, Brutaka arrives and teams up with Hakann to fight Thok and Avak. Reidak sneaks up on Hakann and grabs him. Reidak hurls him at Avak, and then Hakann and Avak slam into each other and are knocked unconscious. Zaktan's prison disappears and he tells Thok he'll deal with him later, and Reidak is stunned that he let Zaktan free. The Toa Nuva and Matoran come in then, and Zaktan begs Brutaka to kill them. He pleads that he'll let him in on the secret of the virus, and give him Zamor Spheres. Brutaka defeats all twelve; Nuva and Matoran in one swipe. That's the end of the Piraka being a team. Zaktan, Vezok and Reidak hold on to a loose alliance, and Hakann, Avak and Thok are trailing along thinking of ways to avoid being exterminated.

When Jaller and his group arrived on Voya Nui,

"A bolt beyond any seen before lanced from the Red Star up above. Midway through its flight, it split into six forks of lightning, each crackling with energy."

The energy then blasted their Canisters and turned them into Toa Inika. They accidentally form their spirit stars, allowing the entire island to see the spirit stars that are now orbiting the red star, shortly after the book ends.
