The game starts with an introductory movie of the six Toa Canisters falling into the Ocean and sailing towards the island of Mata Nui. Afterwards, there is a clip of Toa Onua washing up on the shores near the Papa Nihu Reef and reassembling himself. Onua then heads toward Onu-Wahi.

The main menu takes you to Kini-Nui, where one of Onua's Claws is used as your mouse pointer. Other menus are staged as different places in the Great Temple.

Throughout the game you take control of each of the Toa Mata as you explore the villages of the island. Your task is to discover the Kanohi masks and use them in the appropriate situations, but are also challenged by various Rahi beasts.

BIONICLE: The Legend of Mata Nui has a third-person view. The left hand controls the Toa's movements and the right hand controls the camera. In addition to your basic tasks, you are able to collect small logos in the shape of the Three Virtues. The amount you've collected is displayed on the top right corner of the screen. On the top left corner is your health. On the bottom left corner is your current mask, which spins when in use. And on the bottom right corner is the amount of a certain berry needed to defeat your opponents.

You also have to collect several special items throughout the levels which are displayed in your inventory.

Because the game was never released, the only way one could play it is to find a Beta CD. Most of these CDs are currently property of the LEGO Company, although there are some disks which remains in various people's hands around the world.

[carve] Trivia

  • The Kanohi Vahi was planned to be distributed with the game, but instead, the mask was given away at Walgreens promotions in the United States, among others.
  • Even though all of the Toa should be playable in the Beta CD, a glitch prevents players from advancing past Onua's level.
