The Av-Matoran are one of the many different types of Matoran in the BIONICLE storyline.

The Av-Matoran were the first type of Matoran created by the Great Beings. They can be male or female, unlike other types, and possess small amounts of Elemental Light Energy.

The Av-Matoran left their homeland to colonize Karda Nui. Before the Time Slip, they returned to their homeland, but some were carried back to the Universe Core during the Great Cataclysm, as stalactites fell.

During the Time Slip, a small number of Av-Matoran were taken from their homeland and secretly planted in other lands by the Order of Mata Nui. One such Matoran was Takua, who was placed in Metru Nui.

[carve] Abilities and Traits

Av-Matoran are capable of channeling small amounts of light energy, in the form of light bolts, through their hands, like Toa. When connected to a Toa, Av-Matoran can access special Light-based abilities. Av-Matoran also have the power to change what color their armor is seen as. They have been trained to use this power by reflex to help keep their element secret.

At a certain point in his/her lifetime, if destined, an Av-Matoran will transform into one of the six types of Bohrok. What type of Bohrok the Matoran will become is based upon destiny. After transforming, they are mysteriously teleported to the Bohrok Nests.

Av-Matoran are naturally clad in gold and white armor. All Av-Matoran seen so far have light green or yellow eyes.

• Currently, there is only one village of about 100 Av-Matoran left in Karda Nui due to the attacks by the Brotherhood of Makuta; all of the others have been turned into Shadow Matoran.
• The Av-Matoran in Karda Nui are larger than normal Matoran due to prolonged exposure to energies in Karda Nui. The Matoran would return to normal size when not being exposed to this energy.
• Av-Matoran have a higher chance of being destined to become a Toa than the other types of Matoran.
