Review: 70794 Skull Scorpio

Looks like Lord of Skull Spiders isn't the only supersized arachnid in town. The newest competition is Skull Scorpio. Skull Scorpio is one of the more unique offerings of the summer 2015 sets, but does it offer enough to warrant a purchase?

The Box

Lego kept the same box design as the winter sets. As I've said, I like its size and distinct geometry, though the comic on the back is slightly obscured by the edges. Overall, it's good but it's not new. I will say that the new combiner ideas are better than the winter ones.

The Bits

The parts variety is pretty interesting. The majority of pieces are Technic. There aren't many CCBS parts, and while they're interesting pieces, the other six have more CCBS parts if you prefer them. the new parts are common among the six villain sets, but the translucent neon green parts are unique to Skull Scorpio, and the "infected" Kakama is a nice piece.

The Build

The skeletal structure of Skull Scorpio is basic, but serves the overall design well enough. No, the legs are not articulate at all. Perhaps this is a let down, but it does provide a benefit of stability.

The tail is easily the most prominent feature of the set. The tail itself is a mechanism that can be squeezed to clamp the "pincers" shut. This feature works fairly well, and I'll demonstrate it later. It is also surprisingly large, which looks a bit awkward when not shut.

The final design is pretty nice. It's refreshing to see how well the typical parts can be used for a non-humanoid design. The whole set has a large fixed width due to the legs, which may be bothersome if you don't have much surface space to keep it on. Ultimately, Skull Scorpio is about the size of Lord of Skull Spiders. Perhaps my least favorite thing about Scorpio is its head. It doesn't fit the arachnid design at all.

The pincers work as intended. When closed, they have a considerable amount of force to them, which makes the feature all the more fun. What's better is that the pincer "claws" have small hooks on the inside, which are just the hight size to grab a Protector or Toa by the mask and yank it off. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but it's a nice feature nonetheless!

Overall, I like Skull Scorpio a lot. It doesn't offer much in unique parts or mobility, but the overall design makes for a fun set that stands out among the other sets this summer.

The Brass Tacks

Should I get this set?

Yes

  Good for people who like:

*Unique design
*Effective Technic features
  Not for those looking for:

*New parts - The ones we do get are lackluster
*Posing - Dem stationary legs
*New mask - A nit-pick, but that head doesn't do it for me
  Other Comments:

Ultimately, I feel that Skull Scorpio's strengths outweigh its faults. If you're looking for something different to add to your collection, Skull Scorpio is my recommendation. --Cholie
